11's still elude me PART 2

OK, slicks it is...The hoosier QTP's are my choice. They have done excellent for me this season doing alot of 1.50's (and my suspension still needs more tweeking).

I will easily get two or more full seasons out of these tires.

heck, I have more than 2000 street miles on these and around 30 passes this year and they are around 80% tread.

The mickey thompson ET Streets wear very quickly (track or street).

You figure 940whp and around 2600-2700lbs with driver. Car hasn't been weighed yet, but the whole thing is fiberglass and lexan. And every part on the car is super light. Heck she doesn't even run rear brakes anymore.

I was going to say also, that the Hoosier QTP's don't come any smaller than 245/60R15's. That is 26.5x9.64x15. They do have slicks that are 26x8x15.

I actually ran Mickey Thompson Sport Compacts on my mirage. They were $155 a tire local. They were 24.5x8x15. I was cutting 1.7 sixty foots with a blown stock 89 mirage suspension on just the two step with these things. FWD mind you.

I would like to buy the Hoosier but I too noticed that they don't make a 24.5 and I don't think the 26's would be a good choice for my power level ya know?

If I did MT I would be running the ET Drags............

This will be an at track-only tire, I no longer run the car on the street......

I completely agree with needing new tires, just due to age. My opion is that I like a little squat in the rear but that is just me, and I know my car doesn't compare with yours at all. The passes I made were on old (at least 4 years, came with the car) 225/50/16 NT450's with nasty tread wear from camber being way negative. I'm not sure what to tell you other than trying to lower your launch RPM a little and see if it helps at all.

Yeah, a little squat would be good, it does but only ever so slight. I did try to lower the launch rpm on Sunday to between 4400-4700 and even with a longer slip, once the clutch fully engaged the tires just started to spin.....go figure...

Thanks for the links.....M & H states the required wheel width is 8" for using their slick, and Mickey Thompson states a smallest rim of 6.7" and largest 8.7." I just bought some 15 X 7 wheels, so........what size were the wheels you ran on the Mirage? Why would M & H say 8" required and the Mickey Thompson in the same size have a range of 2" I wonder?

Phil

I actually ran steelie 15x6's. I was not using tubes however. They did not stay on the car, so it was not important to have tubes. I woul djust air them up when it was time to play. No structural interity lost without a tube from what I was told. They just hold air longer. They still leak with tubes though.

So that is 8" tires on 6" rims. Here is a picture when I put them on the back after they were rubbing really bad on the front. I was 800 miles from home and we weren't leaving for 4 more days. FIgured I would give the street tires a chance. Also on our 2G, we run 7" rims without issue. Have to fill the tires up every 2-3 weeks so to be safe. After a month 1-2 tires will bu under 5psi.

Hoosier DOES make a 24.5" slick for a 15" rim. They might not be on Summit's website, but give them a call -- I know for a fact that they do make them; you just have to find who sells them.

I got my information from Hoosier's website. They do but they are only 5" wide and are for front tires on RWD cars.

Yeah..that's what I read as well..........

It will be the M & H for $153 or the MT ET Drag for $167 from Summit. M & H total would be almost $60 cheaper and alot of people run them that I've seen in the import world. I even think thats what Sean Glazar used to run way back on his Talon....

Car looks bad-ass....and so you obviously see no problem with the M & H on the narrow wheel....cool......makes my choice easier. I guess I'm waiting for someone to come up here and talk about how much better one slick is than the other and I haven't seen that.....if you guys on big power have no issues, I can't see why my piddly 295 HP and 337 TQ should be hard to harness with any of the tires we're talking about here.......

Guys- I can get the Mickey Thompson ET Drags for $155 apiece through the shop I work at. I may just go this route. The cheapest I saw the M & H was $153. I cannot get them through the shop though...we have no vendor for them.......

Do any of the import guys use tubes in the slicks?

I understand you were not using them and haven't really heard that anyone else was with them on DSM's but I'm new to all the slick stuff....

Guys--I just spoke with the local Hoosier outlet here in my area and the rep confirmed they DO NOT make a QTP in 24.5 X 8 X15. They don't have "import" sizes like M & H and Mickey Thompson. The smallest QTP they make is the 26". So, with that, I did not think that I had access to slicks through one of my vendors so I thought I'd go with Summit. since I do, I will just order in the MT ET DRAG's and give'em a try. If they have too much grip for some reason, I'll step back to the Hoosier Drag Radial which is 24.2 " diameter. So, they will be in tomorrow, probably just for me to look at, as I most likely will not race again this year.

Phil

Phil, just to confirm, my slicks are M/T's (24.5x8x15's). I think I started out looking For Hoosiers and ended up with tthe M/T's.

MB

I think you will like them Phil. I really enjoyed the few passes I got to make with them. Very good tire for me. It might be a slight bit of over kill for a "low powered" car, but you will have to learn how to drive with them. Not a big deal as you have to remember how to drive again and learn the new setup anyway.

Ahhhhhhhh. OK. Makes sense. I thought maybe Hoosier used to make them but they discontinued them or something, but that wouldn't make sense.

Cool...yep, I'm sure there will be some getting used to them for sure, but, in the long run if they do get me to hook up it will be great. You're right though..no big deal. Thanks for all the help. I will post the first chance I get to run them!

Take care,

Phil

He knows that. His tires were old and not hooking. Not to mention track prep sucked that day.

You can get your 60's down too....
