2G 1 ton or 2 ton?

Hello prob seen me around but I got a 98 mist eclips rs that needs a cam seal replaced I was hoping I can do it with out pulling the engine if I don't have to but will of I do. I was wondering if a 1 ton will do just fine or would I need a two ton? Same question for the stand I would want to put my whole engine on it so that way I can do other work while I have it out thanks.

Yes I do have the service book and will do this job step by step from the book itself

Are you asking if you need a 2000 pound lift to hoist an engine out of the bay? If so you are plenty good with a half ton or 1 ton lift. Also you shouldn't need to pull the engine to replace a cam seal.

That also apply to a stand right? I didn't think so I'm just worried I might mess up the timing but I was going to use zip ties I'm just more worried about the timing getting messed up on the bottom half. I have never done this b4 so not really sure what to expect not only that I do not have a belt tensioner tool thing to make sure I don't over strain the belts if that's even possible? Just wanting to do the job right Lol some times I make extra work for myself work smarter not harder right?

Personally, I used a 1 ton engine hoist to pull my 4g63 and transmission with no issue. I would think you could get by with a 1 ton for the 420a as well.

I used my perrin "big red" at the longest extension while doing mine (engine and awd trans), its only rated for 1000lbs at that position.

Any tips on installing the cam oil seal? I wouldnt Want to spend over $100 for someing I can either make are use something thats similar that's cheaper unless I have to but I've also heard cheaper is not always better.

I don't think you will need to pull the motor. If you do, make sure that the harbor freight hoist is long enough to work with the dsm. It is a small car but its also a small hoist. The reach was not long enough for another project I was working on...

A 1 ton would work just fine. Do not get a half-ton, though. They're just too small.

I will reiterate what has been said earlier. A person can do anything they set theur mind to but the questions youre asking tell me youre not ready for this job. A book alone will likely not get you through it. I would have it done or at leadt have someone work with you.

I understand your point and concern and I'll till you what I told everone else I come here just like everyone else for tips and have my questions answered with a straight forward answers not to be judge of my ability our question on it. Not trying to be a butt about it or be rude or anything I don't want people to think " oh he's asking this he shouldn't do it" yes I can do it with the right info and tools and know the things that can go wrong if not done right the reason why this community page made right? Comments like this don't help no one so I don't see why people say it because all it does is discouraging somebody anyway again not trying to be a butt or rude let your cars go fast and let the boost and boost gods be with you.

Ok well Harbor Freight only has 1 to 2 ton a available and from what I heard for the price Its not that bad.

I understand 100% especially for somebody who is completely new to this and I didn't think you had to pull the engine but I wanted to be 100% sure "better to be 100% sure than not sure at all" I know I at least have to put a jack under the engine to hold it up when removing the one engine mount.

On the 420 just drop the subframe out of the bottom of the car and lift the body off the engine this is how I pulled the engine out of my 98 rs. My cousin and I pulled the engine and transmission out of the car without even using an engine hoist.

For what it's worth the 4g63 is about 450lbs and a manual trans is about 120... So the 420A couldnt be too far off that

1 ton hoist, 750 lb stand, both from harbor freight, will work just fine. I would recommend using a load leveler

If it's a harbir freight lod leveler I'd recommend the wider one, i bought a 2 ton crane, 1,000 lb engine stand and both load levelers. The big one is better
