So I'm happy it went that well. This is the second time I've pulled it ever (twice in 7 months) This was working by myself on my garage floor, no air tools, I was hauling though trying to get done.

I was having shifting problems and then it wouldn't go into gear at all with the car on. Once I had the trans out I was looking around with the light and couldn't see anything wrong, thought I pulled it for nothing, but then I grabbed the throw out bearing and it slid off the input shaft in 5 pieces LOL! Over the summer I grenaded the bearings out of one, and now this one fell apart. OEM like everyone says to use, but I think I had the clutch adjusted wrong and it was always putting pressure on the PP.

EDIT:

Also last time I changed my fuel injectors it took me exactly 7mins from start to finish! This car is making me sound like a really good mechanic LOL.

wow I feel like such a noob, you guys pull a tranny in like an hour, And it took me 2 hours to swap my manifold and turbo today. (it was my first time)

dont feel bad dude...i know its gonna take me a while to do the tranny in my car so its gonna suck seeing all the guys do it in a hour and it take me 5-6 hours

^^ Everybody has to start somewhere and that is how you get to those numbers..
Unfortunately, some people say they have taken their trannies out x number of times but where its easy to take the tranny out look how many times it has needed to be done LOL
If I could go back I would love to say I took my Tranny out once took me 2-3 hours and lasted me this long! hahaha :thumb:

That's actually not that bad for the first time. I got stuck on idk how many rusted bolts the first time I took my turbo off. And as someone mentioned, my engine bay is kinda bare. I didn't have to touch my battery, intake, or upper IC pipe. And like I said first time took about 4.5 hours.

What is really dumb is that it took me about 3 hours to take out and re-install my intake manifold when I took out the AC compressor. Putting it back in wasn't hard at all and probably took 30mins, it was getting it out that was the hard part. :coy:

Truth.

The first time my tranny came out, I was paying to have it done (a looong time ago). The second time, it took me all night. But the more you do it, the quicker you become and the easier it gets. All in time, as they say.

So, in the next week or so I'll be pulling the motor from my 1990 GSX for the first time.

I've also gotten decently quick at pulling the tranny (probably in the two hour or less range). So, my question is, do I pull the engine and tranny as one piece or should I drop the tranny out and then pull the motor? :D

update guys:

We started pulling the tranny today, ran into a snag along the way. The dumbass I got the car from put tuner lugs on it which he didnt give me the key to them. so it took us a while to get them off. After that is was a breeze. got the tranny dropped and clutch out then took us a while to get the flywheel bolts off. all in all took us about 3 1/2 - 4 hours to do everything. we called it anight and plan to finish tommorrow when I get my buddies torque wrench. It was fairly easy and plan to do it again soon as my clutch burns up so I can do a better clutch.

Yeah you all may have done it in 1-2 hours but we did it in a muddy yard with 25 degree weather. So I dont think we did bad. It shouldnt take us long to finish up tommorrow and I will be driving it by tommorrow night.

What about an automatic? How much harder/easier is it? I need to drop mine to put in a new real main seal and gasket... leaking oil :(

what i have found to be the easiest way w/ an auto in a 2g is to use a motor cycle jack. i always work alone and a friends 2g that i work on is auto. that is a heavy bastard. i borrowed a neighbors motorcycle jack put the trans on that and lowered the car a touch, the moto jack doesn't go as high. I have also heard of people using an engine hoist to lift the auto trans into place.

I couldnt imagine man handleing a awd tranny,we used a big ass tranny jack and a 3 ton floor jack with 4 jackstands...

Pull 'em together. you'll save time and energy.

Do I have to pull the axles out of the hubs? As in removing the castle nut on the axles etc etc, or can I just pull the assembly out and slide the axles out while I pull the engine/trans up?

as much trouble as you will do just to do that its easy to just get a 32mm and take the dam things out...

I don't remove them on my 2G. It saves time to just leave them in the hubs.

On my 2G, I disconnect the spindle from the upper control arm. Then unbolt the brake line from the spindle. After that, there should be enough 'play' to pull the entire knuckle down and out away from the car. This will allow the axles to pull out from the tranny on each side. This works for AWD and FWD, but the AWD guys will also have to unbolt the driver's side shaft from the block as well.

On a 1G, it would probably be easier to just remove the CV shafts from the hubs. 1G cars don't have the lower shock mount in the way like 2G cars do. So, as long as the but isn't seized and the shaft slides freely out of the hub, then I'd just remove them on a 1G.
