So I have a 1993 mitsubishi eclipse with the 1.8l motor, it was running great until the timing belt broke about 3 days ago. I get it off no problem but whenever i slide the outer crankshaft sprocket on i cant seem to turn the crank by hand anymore. It turns fine when i just have the inner balance shaft sprocket on but when i slide the outer one on it just locks it up. any ideas?

Are all of your timing marks correct? Can you spin it in reverse? If you can spin it in reverse, check your timing marks. It sounds like you may be off.

Non-interference? Really? Everyone has always told me that this motor was interference. If I don't have bent valves from yesterday's "experience" then that will be great. I won't post about that here. I'll make my own post but would really love confirmation on the interference thing.

Non-interference for the record. You couldn't bend valves on that motor if you tried. Did you happen to leave a tool in the back of the block when you checked if your balance shaft was in time or 180 out?

thanks for the confirmation Kronus.

It makes sense to focus on the assembly of the sprockets. If it's fine until you put that on, then it's most likely touching something. Maybe check in the manual and see if you are putting something on backwards? Or maybe forgetting something?
