Its a jumbo tig cup I bought a while ago and it worked "ok" just where the screen is on it normally doesnt diffuse the argon efficiently.

WOW is it QUIET. ####ing baller! Beats the shit out of my craftsman. that thing would leak down over night. I put 40psi in it on friday/saturday and it's still in it this morning!

After work in the afternoon, I still got a little time to work on my beloved colt. This time it was to make a dump tube for the wastegate utilizing nothing but pie cuts. Keep in mind I am LEARNING HOW TO TIG.. so they are not pretty welds, but I want to place things in here to see how I progress as a welder. So lets begin:

Here is the first set ( in hind sight I needed to clean that slag of a little better on one cut. ) I was having a very hard time figuring out the heat settings.

This weld tack ( the shiny part), had entirely too much filler, but I think the heat is getting close

this shot just looks like plain shit.. Notice, poor to no heat, on the glob in one of the cuts, then the fusion no filler weld next to it has too much heat

A shot of the tubing showing compound curve ( most cuts are between 8 - 10 degrees of separation

A friend of mine came over to show me some of the settings, you can see the full weld in one of the cuts, that had appropriate color and this time the tube was back purged as well, which made the puddle flow better with 0.045 thickness filler rod

Bare with me... I am learning.

Anyway I have beeen practising or more like burning my stainless dump tube. Remember people I am LEARNING so these welds are butt #### ugly, but I feel I am using the best techniques that I know how,

First up, I bought a ck gas saver lense with diffuser cup ( this really is pretty cool, bc I can actually see my weld through the pyrex, plus the little screen helps diffuse the argon a little better than an open cup

I then started to back purge the entire dump tube flooding the piss out of it ( 10cfh)

So on to the welds, using 0.045 308 filler, Amperage 50 ( 3/4 throttle), pre flow 0.1, post flow 5 secs... gas sheilding 12cfh

The bottom weld in the picture looks like too much amerage, but holy shit we have some color this time, instead of black grey garbage ( no dimes)
The weld above it you can see how I am having a hard time with maintaining that puddle by the grey dime

this was very hard for me to do and consequently I burnt the metal here, I just couldn't get the weld to wash in evenly at the heat setting

a little better than the other side but still pretty poor

showing the weld puddle inside the tube, looks exactly like it is outside, full penetration and good color, I am very happy about this

left a nice crater hole in the blue marking, I have to learn to taper off the heat slowly while adding a little filler, or maybe even go in a circular motion.

and some more general shitty shots

Antilag -
did you leave a gap when you welded those angles or a bevel?
Here is a tip, don't start on stainless and don't start on anything other than flat pieces.
What machine are you using?

i stole some little stainless scrap pieces from school today, i really need to work on making the bead uniform throughout, seems like theres always a spot or two that i need to re-position before continuing, and you can tell where LOL..

( 1/8" Stainless, no idea which type, my guess is 304, with a 308 1/16th filler, 2%thoriated 3/32's tung, and jumbo tig cup w/ gas lens, between 70-120ish amps, i was pulsing the pedal in hopes not to cook this little piece )

And i found this in the trash can at school as well, pretty decent sized stainless that somebody tried to weld.... im not sure what the hell they were doing. im pretty terrible at tig still and i can weld a shit load better then this.

i just ran a bead or two on this thing for shits and giggles.

I am also interested in what machine Antilag is using.

Good advice for anyone. Don't start on anything people will see! Lol

Scrap pieces, don't try to make parts.

And Compression's weld is looking pretty good. Keep it up

If i could get those little SS mesh screens to stop melting on me the whole bead would be silver! Anybody ever try putting a screen over the end of the cup? like ive seen people say white scotch brite works perfect but i can never find white? and the green just catches fire very quickly.

Gamble,

what do you mean by left a gap ?... if you are talking about, a gap between each section of pipe; then I tried to make them butt up together as close as possible

I am using the Longevity 200sx, that you suggested me to get. Honestly I absolutely love it. I have some very proficient tig welding friends, that have millers, both old school transformer machines and newer inverter machines. Every single one of them said that they were surprised at how well the machine behaves.

I am learning guys, so as stated my welds and beads are not the best.

HI TJ :) ( wishihadatalon)

I was right there with you not long ago, also got into a 200sx.

Best advice is youtube videos watch as many as you can, and run a shit ton of small to medium beads on some barstock or something.

Imo you want to run smaller beads , so you visually inspect your welds frequently. Quench your practice piece often because its not going to weld the same red hot.

Look into getting a smaller torch with a super flex hose and gas lens, it will make you much much more comfortable while welding.

And get the BIGGEST argon cylinder you can afford. The bigger it is the cheaper it is to fill (per lb)

Thank you for your advice, here is how I welded that dump tube while I was purging

hit pedal and let off, so I already started post flowing before arc intiation, then I initiated the arc, made a bead for two seconds, then stopped... post flowed for 7 secs or somewhere in that range, but mostly starting the next bead a couple of seconds before my post flow ended..

any suggestions on what torch and flexible cable to get ?.. the one that come with longevity is HUGE and at times I have to stradle the hose on my neck, so that there isn't that much pressure on my wrist as I move the wand... that has been my biggest issue so far, is getting comfortable holding the wand.
I Watch : Weldingtipsandtricks.com but that guy is a gifted professional that makes it look so easy.

I will take your advice on practicing with bar stock.

Yes they make a ck9 or wp9 just for longevity, gamble can probably fine you one for a steal.

Fyi from my experience and talking to people , welding pipe is one of the hardest to learn because there are so many repositions required its hard to get it all uniform.

Get in a comfortable position to where you could weld the whole pass in one shot and to flat position or horizontal T joints if you really want to weld a joint.

Fkin ninja gamble LOL..
