Started welding school, yo can't get argon in canada without a monthly subscription sadly it's all regulated. BUT i'll get to be using a synchrowave 250 and i'll post up some others such as oxy fuel, mig, tig, stick, and cutting torch for you guys :)

you can get %100 pure argon in ontario you just have to buy the small bottles... or at least thats what my local praxair guy told me.

If you start an account they will lease you the bigger bottles its $100 for the contract for the year and $100 roughly to fill it each time... but when you consider that your getting more then 2x the argon in the bigger bottles you might aswell just go for those anyways... all you have to do is fill out the application

even the mid size bottles only seem to last about 3-4 hours

I cant believe i never saw this thread before.
Great work guys, ive seen some gorgeous stuff so far :thumb:

I talked to Air Liquide and i guess i can only rent a bottle $70 for a year; and $70 per fill for a #22 bottle (medium size) probably same size. Is that even reasonable??? Mine was like 3 ft tall was 35 bucks to fill and 70 to BUY the bottle in the states. :(

Yeah the 3 to 4 hour one is the one i own right now that i left in Washington.
Those aluminum beads look good.

I wish my welds came out like that, especially colorful, My welds just came out.... ehh. Looks like aluminum welding on stainless pipe haha

its all in the gas coverage

mike

Possible PM or something with an explanation. This is all new to me. Specific gas? I was thinking about sanding down the welds flat/smooth and going back over them after I noticed a couple small pin holes where I missed. I would kill for my welds to have color.

Gas you need for tig welding is pure argon. It helps keep away atmospheric contamination by shielding the puddle from oxygen. Thats why they call it GAS tungsten metal arc welding. Or Tungsten Inert Gas = TIG. You absolutely need argon unless you want your welds to look like a chicken shit on them.

LOL yeah I know. But was just asking how to get the colorful welds. because mine came out looking like those aluminum welds. No color. Just plain beads.

When you are welding TIG your welds color (assiming you have the gas on the right flow level) are determined by the ammount of heat you are using.

If your welds are coming out black you are using to much heat. if they come out blue you are probably either just using the right ammount of heat or your getting to the not enough heat side. if you look at the picture i posted you will see that my welds are obviously to cold... 1/2" stainless plate on 1/4" angle. only running 100A on a small mastercraft 110V TIG and it comes out blue.

if your welds come out with a green powder your not using enough gas or the gas is turned off

I would guess that if your welds are coming out white there to cold... try turning up the heat.

Longevity 140 and spool gun arrive tomorrow!! I have a full tank of c25 and a full tank of argon waiting!!!!

Geez, how many welders do you own and have owned!? LOL

Haha quiet a few.
Harbor freight stick welder (then converted to tig)
harbor freight flux (very shorted lived, used about 1 or 2 spools of wire)
lincoln mig
hobart mig
eastwood tig
miller diversion 180 (sold last week :( )
longevity 160sx
longevity 140 & spool gun arriving this week
thermal arc 186 arriving soon
Longevity 200ex coming soon. (for testing only, I don't get to keep it)

Oh and a blue point mig welder. Bought it and gave it to my dad.

So I started with the stick and converted it to tig to see if i even liked tig. So I bought the eastwood tig welder and it showed up not working so I sent it back and got the miller diversion. Got a smoking deal on a hobart mig and I got that. I missed a mig since I sold my lincoln. Bought the longevity 160sx because I wanted some more balance control for those rare times when I need it. Sold the miller to pay some bills.
Got a really good deal on a longevity mig and spool gun. It was cheaper to do it this way than to buy a conversion kit and spool gun for my hobart. Always wanted to try a spool gun.
Bought the blue point used and was going to flip it and decided to give it to my dad.
I can't tell you what i paid for the thermal arc but it's going to be my main unit now that i have 220v power and it has pulse and other cool options. I asked longevity if I could use their 200ex as a comparison and they said sure so they are sending me one to borrow for a short time then it's going back.

So as of right now I have 2 (hobart and longevity 160sx) and tomorrow will be a different story.

TIG WELDING STAINLESS STEEL 101

!!!!The desired color the weld bead and HAZ area should be is a GOLDEN/STRAWcolor.

Blue and purple are not terrible...... Butttt that depends on the intensity of the color. Darker means more carbide precipitation, not good! This stems from incomplete gas coverage or overheating.

No SS weld should have a rainbow,

Okay so how do you make a great colored SS weld??? Purge gas inside the joint and more than enough gas coverage from your torch (ie very large gas cups). Ways to help........ Trailing shields or copper heat-sinks.

Well i had my first chance to hop on a stick welder for 4 hours. I havent done this since freshmen year of highschool. I'm having trouble with my depth perception come end of the electrode. We were told to do a few beads then Fill inbetween each bead pass. Mine although looks like ass because i kept having too much heat due to resistance. (Electrode too far from
Parent metal) Meaning some spatter, not bad for the first time in 10 years imho.

More practice for me!!! I'll post up some oxy-fuel ones when i get to do that as it will be much better cause of my tig experience.
This was done using a syncrowave 250 with E7018 filler
