Yet another Buy or not question? 98 GS-T

I looked at a 98 GS-T with 101k on the clock, Apexi exhaust, intake system, and a BOV that doesnt recirculate (which he said has about 500 miles on it). He was asking $7500 and I have him down to $5500. The clutch doesnt have pressure until about half the way to the floor (might be the slave) and the shifter is cut down for shorter throws. Everything else looks clean and it has leather with a moonroof. What kind of potential costs might I run into with this?

look for proof of maintenance, i.e. timing belt, balance shaft belt, tensioners, and oil changes all those kinds of things, all the timeing and tensions should have been done at 60k and will need to be done again at 120k . if it hasnt been done it can be expensive for a shop to do and u can use that as leverage. check for signs of crank walk, (loss of clutch pressure on sharp left hand turns) or loose crank pulley. check the cv boots umm... theres lots to check, actually there is a whole article on how to do a pre purchase check on dsm's in the faq . if it starts right up, runs healthy looks like it has been taken care of and passes a compression check then id say go for it.

The guy said he had the oil changed, however its synthetic. I've heard that thats bad for turbos. The clutch pressure is bad to begin with could that be early signs of crankwalk?

No its not crankwalk. Its when you push the clutch pedal down and it doesn't come back. That can be one of the signs of your crank walking. Check the clutch fluid first. Do the standard: compression test, ask about t-belt, check for oil leaks, ect.... $5500 isn't a bad price, try to talk him down a little more though. Hope this helps.

Yea he said that he replaced it at 100k, but im worried about the synthetic oil, is that bad for turbos?

no synthetic is a step up from non synthetic in every way MOST dsm'ers run synthetics, it withstands heat break down alot better than non synthetics makeing it great for turbo cars.

Does this guy have receiepts of the maintenance that's been done to this car, or is he just saying that he's done it? I would not buy this car if he can't pull up any paperwork. a 98 with 100k on it? geez.

Does it have the original turbo on it still?

yea orig turbo, and he wont let me look at the inlet, ill prob replace it anyway with a 14b or bigger. the idle doesnt drop when i push the clutch in so thats a good sign, but the pressure o the clutch is still iffy

Thats kinda fishy, If you decide to get the car tell him you'll only buy if you can check out the shaft play.
I'm a dick to dumb people but thats what I'D do.

yea maybe I should be too, I dont think hes too keen on dsms. Is it possible to check for CW by getting the car on a lift and moving the pulley with a crow bar for play?

Straight up, if theres something that he doesnt want you to look at, and wont lower the price because of that, then tell him to go screw himself, I think thats a load of crap if he wont let you check out the shaft play on the turbo, it sounds a little fishy to me.
