I want to test my pcv valve under boost. Is there anyway I can get the turbo to boost by reving the engine under the hood?

I recently blew out my dipstick, I did a leakage test and my intake valves are sticking open a little so that would mean boost is getting in there when it shouldnt be right? Causing excess crankcase pressure.

My valve cover breather works fine, I pulled the pcv valve, I can blow through it easily, I also pulled the hose that goes from the pcv to the intake. I make sure it and both fittings where not clogged.

So, basically i want to have the engine under boost just for a second to see if the pcv blows off excess crankcase pressure. But being as there is boost in the intake that will keep the pcv from opening wont it? So my intake valves sticking open is what is causing excess crankcase pressure?

i could build about 5spi when i revved my stock t25 up to 5k and let out a nice sound. now with evo16g im lucky to get 2-3psi in neutral. you should build up very minimal amounts of boost while in neutral.

possibly youre 1g bov takes more pressure to pop off than the other aftermarket ones?

so when if lets off from 0psi to like -15 or whatever, it should make the psshhh sound? just my stock bov and stock intake pipe make it so that i cant hear it?

more than likely, on my freinds 90 talon awd with the stock bov and intake pipe you could barely hear it in neutral revving, but on the road you could tell it was there. and by barely i mean he would revv it and i had my ear on the pipe and there was just a hiss of air coming through the return tube.

my boost guage gets to about 5-7 psi in nuetral while revving. a friend of mine with a 1gb gets about the same. stock turbo and bov on both of ours. you can also barely hear the bov sound from them unless we are driving around.

That is very normal.

There's not enough load on the engine, while the car is in neutral, to make the turbo build much boost. If your car has the factory air-can (and especially factory-style filter), you might not hear any blowing-off at all.

Don't sit in your car, revving your engine in neutral to hell, trying to build boost--that's silly.

Hahahahhaa.... If you can build boost in neutral, Your turbo isn't big enough.

Sell your car :| Hey look I want everyone to hear my CoOl BlOw OfF VaLvE... "6500rpm rev, Wah-psh"

Later that evening..

"Thread topic"

Help, I was just at a stop light in neutral and my car just started to make this horrible noise coming from the engine, What is it please help!

Then it leads back to this thread, And everyone laughs at you.

I am not the most technical person on this site, but I think I know a little about this. First of all, you dont want to hear that pssssshhhhh sound, that means you are losing boost as the air is exiting into the atmosphere. What you want to do is have it recirculate back into the intake so you dont lose any boost. This does not make that pssshhhh sound, but it does make a whistle at high rpms. I had the Apex'i twin chamber BOV at first, and it made this loud psshhh sound as it was adjustable. When I upgraded the turbo, the guys at the shop told me I was losing boost pressure through the BOV, about 3-4 psi. Now I have the Greddy Type S BOV, and have a silicone hose going from the BOV back into the intake. There is a way to make the whistle louder by attaching a vacuum hose to the wastegate, but it won't add any performance. Like I said, I am not the DSM guru, so if you have another opinion, please let me know.

you should be able to build boost with no load on the motor, ie: neutral, or foot on clutch while in gear.

I've always wondered if my car was normal. I always read that it's not possible to build boost in neutral. My mbc is set at 16 psi and I can build 16 psi of boost by just flooring it in neutral 'til 7000 rpm. My other friends Talons can't do the same. Is it possible that my base timing isn't correct or the timing belt jumped a tooth? But the car pulls very good. It's a 1g with the stock 14b by the way.

I have a greddy type s and stock piping to the turbo and intercooler and mine goes off just fine when not in gear. AND I DONT VENT. I notice a change in sound when i messed with the hard vs soft bolt

edit: you shouldn't make boost with no load unless you're running a stutter box.

Friction and acceleration of engine components (particularly the rotating assembly) are the "load", albeit a small load compared to having to accelerate the car via the transmission. It's certainly possible to build positive pressure in the intake by revving in neutral. Why you'd do it is beyond me unless you were doing it combined with a stutterbox to build boost on the line.
So who won the BOV match?

One of my friends drives around in a 92 jeep cherokee with CO2 from a paintball gun, he connected some hosing to it and drives aroun releasing the CO2 out the window, sounds just a like a BOV. So for all you N/Ts and People who feel the need to show people you have a turbo (otherwise known as idiots, who should not own a DSM in the first place) theres your quick fix. CO2 Cartridges, hoses, passenger do release the co2, and gun to shoot yourself in the face after you attemped doing this. NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO RRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEE PLEASE.!!!!

why am i being flamed? u all swear like u have never reved ur engine for fun... BS... and yes i would like to show off my turbo to anyone watching.... so what, i like the sound, alot of other people do to... do u not care how ur car sounds? stop the hate! its just a question, i was wondering why my car doesnt do something that someone elses does...

Hey man I'm just playing, yes a BOV is fun especially when trying to get a chick attention... I'm just sick of all the f- ers out on the street, turbo civic and various others cars (SRT 4's) reving their BOV like they just can't get enough. I like the "NAA NAA NA NAAAA NAA YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT I HAVE" Just please don't make sounds your strong point.

The speed of your exhaust gas is not what mainly spools your turbo. Your turbo is spooled by the expansion of the exiting exhaust gases from the cylinder ie; there is a load, you are MOVING. When you rev your engine the only load is it turning itself. Not enough to spool a turbo, especially a big one.

So, all in all, don't try to beat'em by seeing who can rev their engine the highest, just show em what the DSM's are made of.

Is there any fun in owning a car anymore? The original thread starter just wanted to know how a turbo car could build boost in neutral. He didn't ask for stupid opinions or flaming! That's why he posted on the newbie forum.

What is the point of sitting there revving your engine in neutral? It puts wear on the engine.

So we shouldn't go wot or crank the boost because those also put wear on the engine?

Well... that certainly didn't bring much to the discussion!

At least a good explanation about the ''neutral boosting''. :thumb:

IMO, I find it easier to launch the car with 10 psi of boost on tap than without boost... there's your reason for doing it! And yes, I also vent my SSQV just for the fun of it. Not to attract attention but for the simple pleasure of owning and driving a car! Peace! :talon: :dsm:

He was asking how he can build boost so he can hear his bov in neutral. I myself cannot build boost. If I rev the car, I could hear the blow off valve though. You do not need to build boost for the blow off valve to go off. Anything off of the idle vaccume, Will sound off the blow off valve. My greddy type-s is vented and it is audible, Even in neutral. Hearing the turbo spool up in neutral, Or building boost, I cannot do though.

Open up your intake tract and the noises should be more audible.

you are actually boosting while in neutral or with the clutch pressed it. Thats why ur boost gauge reads 0 instead of negative numbers bc if u werent boosting at all, it would be in the negative numbers, and this is also why u can here the swoosh or psshh sound on some cars when in nuetral. I may be wrong though. :shhh: :talon:
