will this trans fluid work, or will it eat my syncros?

i bought some store brand transmission fluid that was an "80w-85w-95w" weight fluid. it is not synthetic. the bottle said that it was suitable for both GL-4 AND GL-5 rated applications. i think stock weight is 75w-90, so this is a little heavier. will this fluid work in my transmission, or am i playing with fire?

You missed the point. He has an N/T. It must run factory transmission fluid only, or the synchronizer brake material will be destroyed.
I came across this when I first bought my GS. I quizzed numerous Chrysler techs who informed me that the fluid the non-turbo 2G tranny uses is nothing more than Synthetic 75W90 GL5 with a friction modifier in it.

I bought a couple quarts of Mobil 1 75W90 and a bottle of friction modifier, and blended my own fluid at a fraction of what the dealer would've charged for what was probably the same fluid. That was over 50k ago, and my trans is still shifting butter-smooth. In fact, I should be changing it again in the spring, and I plan on doing the same thing.

Okey, gotcha. Here we go:

the 2G NT motors were the Chrysler 420A variety which used a different tranny than the "F" series of trannies for the 4G series motors .. why people are rubbing their brains on why NOT use synth in these NT trannies - being it's a whole different animal!

AWD. I put Syncromesh in my first tranny fluid change and did not like it at all. My shifting got way too notchy. Not smooth at all. I drained it and put in Redline Shockproof and it felt and still feels great! It's getting to be time to replace my tranny fluids again and I wish there was some place around town that sold it so I could just walk in and buy it instead of ordering it and waiting for it to get delivered at my door.

Synthetic Blend Gear Oil

This is the gear oil I am using right now. It gets changed at least once a year for whatever reasons and the oil always stinks like its new out of the bottle when I drain the trans. Its a TRE stage II with LSD insert and supposedly theres a neodymium (is the spelling correct?) magnet on the drain plug and its supposed to catch shavings. Theres never anything on it, the trans shifts OK I can do 7000 rpm shifts no problem through all gears once its warm, (moring temps are around 34-40*F right now lately) and I watch the oil that drains out of my transmission and my engine. The trans oil is always the same color as when it goes in with no particles once I look at it in the drain pan.

Would there be a problem using this oil?

I looked at the Gear max the other day in the store and it said none corrosive on the bottle as well as saying its good for GL-4 and GL-5 trannys. Its gotta be fine for are trannys then. If Royal purple don't know what their talking about with there ratings on oils I give up on all oils all together. If a gear oil just says GL-5 tho. don't use it. I ran the Mobil 1 LS gear oil and it was fine at the beginning but not even 2000 miles later from putting it in and the shifting got notchy and 2nd started grinding very little. I dumped it out and it was Black! not even 3000 miles on it and it was Black! and when I put it in it was crystal clear. Don't run the Mobil 1. Im running the penz syncromesh right now. its ok. Its just way too thin and its notchy shifting as well but alot better then the Mobil 1 was and no more grinding what so ever. Cant wait till I pop in the Royal purple Gear Max and get rid of this stuff tho.:rocks:

this, that, this, that.

Give me a fluid brand for my 90 manual tranny, and transfer case. I just bought 3 qts. of syncro then read this.

your just going to have to experiment with different fluids and see which ones you like best. a lot of people say penzoil syncromesh is the best bang for the buck, but i was NOT pleased when i tried it. right now, im using this stuff i got from my mechanic, i cant remember what its called, but its a gl4 rated synthetic that ive never heard of, and it is awesome. i need to call him tomorrow and ask him what it is.

to answer your question, start with the cheap fluids and work your way to the more expensive ones until you find one that works. this is just my opinion, but i would stay away from syncromesh in a 1g AWD. go with something heavier.

Great... I just made a similar post a few days ago and anyways, I just recently put mobile 1 ls in my tranny, and it shifted really really smooth. I noticed that when I drained the old fluid out, it was completely black and smelled like ass. So let me get this straight, your saying after about 2k miles, to change the gear oil, or will it ruin my tranny? I also put this stuff in my t-case, is that ok? Advanced auto rep is the one that told me they would work.

I see where you're coming from, but starting with cheap fluids could spell disaster. I'd then recommend starting at the middle and heads upwards.

Myself, I just said 'whooie with all the worry' and dove in using Redline MT-90 since most of the DSM'ers and tranny shops love this fluid.

I have used ALOT of different gear fluids.. from royal purple, mobile 1, redline(not mt-90) Lucus, ect... an i finally got some BG Syncroshift II... best i ever used... soon as i put it in shifted like a hot knife through butter!! :thumb: Very happy with it...

ok,i see gear oil and atf being used in this thread, what oil come from the factory in the trannys?atf or gear oil?

..you think that the factories would use the right kind of fluid for the two types of trannies....along what is mentioned in the owners manual on what is to be used...

i was asking a simple ?,i see gear oil and atf so why cant you just give me a simple awnser on what to use?

For those of you who simply need to know what to put in a 420a, go w/ syncromesh. It got rid of a grind into second and chatter at idle. It says right on the bottle its safe on yellow metals, so you're good to go.

Except that 420A gearboxes
DO NOT HAVE YELLOW METAL SYNCHRO BRAKES.

So since the Mobil gear oil turned black are you saying that it broke-down the fastest? I drain mine usually once a year and it is the same color as when it goes in. It never smells any worse either. I provided the Valvoline Durablend link. The shifting is crap when the car is first started and drove in the cold mornings but after a little driving the fluid limbers up and shifts ok. Still a little notchy going into 1st and 3rd though but takes no effort to overcome. More concrete info for the gear oil that people use though please. Help us to use the best to keep our cars running for as long as possible.
