Hey guys, I have recently noticed my '97 awd talon has started leaking fluid, I have a feeling its transmission fluid because my trans slipped from 2nd to 3rd gear for the first time ever today. And its a stock auto with IPT shift kit and fluid & filter changed about 7k miles ago. (but I did notice a small coolant leak from my blocked off FAIV ports on my w/p pipe that is trickling towards my suspected tranny leak area)...the suspected area is around the area where the trans mates up with the block back towards the firewall side..... I work nights now so have a trouble finding time to jack the car up to inspect it closely.

I know for sure that it IS NOT leaking at the trans pan, trans drain plug or passenger axle seal.... so im curious, how common is it for the axle seal to leak on the drivers side and do you guys think that is where my leak is coming from?

If so, how hard is it to change the axle seal with the trans in the car (and keeping as much fluid as possible)?

thanks for any help!

The site wont let me post any pics :/.... plus if I could find time to get under the car I would know pretty much exactly what was leaking.

I was mainly wondering how common it is for the trans seals to leak where the axles get inserted into the trans.

Well I dug into the car today and yanked the drivers side cv shaft because I thought thats where my auto trans leak was coming from..... well that was not the case, the cv shaft seal was dry as can be so it definitely wasnt leaking from there.

so I pulled the tcase because the leak was showing right in between where the tcase bolts to the tranny.

So my question is, Does the input shaft that goes from the tranny into the tcase see any auto transmission fluid?? Its leaking pretty bad and Im not sure what I need to fix/replace.

Mine was 100% dry of fuild when I pulled it only a few weeks ago (Trans - TC). Maybe you have a leak further up top that's running down? have you verified that it is indeed tranny fuild and not motor oil?

Yes it is def tranny fluid, it smells like it and has a reddish tint to it... and is coming from the transmission side seal for the tcase shaft from as far as I can tell.

I will try to load pictures of it but it wouldnt let me when I posted my last post :/

edit: still wont let me load pictures.... I would send some pictures via text to anyone who would be willing to look at them and tell me your opinion PLEASE!

Pm me for my cell number and ill send the couple pics to who ever is willing to help.

Thanks!

Yes, there will be an input shaft seal, front pump gasket, and a transfer case seal. Also I beleive its possible for some of the pump bolts to leak. All of these can leak fluid.

I believe that it is the input shaft seal that is leaking. But I am going to replace the input shaft seal and transfer case seal both just to be sure...

any suggestions, advice or experience on how to change the input shaft seal (shaft from the trans that goes into the tcase) on the transmission side with the motor and converter both in the car?

Thanks again for uploading the pics for me bro!

in the too pic it shows where my suspected leak is coming from, around the output shaft from the tranny side... there is all kinds of old fluid/gunk under the shaft in the bottom of the trans housing directly below the shaft around the wet spot on the side of the trans (wasn't that way 1k miles ago).

the second pic shows where the tcase seal meets the trans and it is all gunky and nasty as well (thick gunk, kinda like anti-sieze but I know its not anti-sieze because I was the last person to meas with the tcase)

and the last pic shows how bad it really is, the leak goes all the way to the back of the car, and I washed the WHOLE under-belly 2 miles before I parked the car so I could better find the leak (which obviously didnt help because after 2 miles it was already all over the belly of the car)

please if anyone knows what I seal need to fix and how I need to go about fixing it, I would GREATLY appreciate it!
