So I get home from visiting the grandparents and see a puddle of tranny fluid pouring out onto the driveway. I jack the car up and notice the driver side axle is completely loose and wobbly. Upon further inspection I notice the bracket that bolts up to the engine block is completely off and swinging freely.

Anyone have the specs on the bolts that go there? And would it be wise to just change the seal at the same time (MD719710)?

Well, first you have to check to see if the bolt(s) broke off (and not just threaded out). It would be unusual for them to unthread, much more likely they broke off. If that's the case, it's not a simple matter of putting new bolts in, you'll have to try to get the broken piece(s) out.

I'll pull the crossmember out and get a better look tomorrow during the daytime. Previous owner had the motor and clutch replaced before I got it so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't tighten everything properly. It's been fun fixing their mistakes so far...

Check the other end of the axle while your at it. Also check the end of the axle that goes into the tranny for metal shavings and wear.

Yeah, I wou;d guess that the bolts broke off once that cracket loosened up. I would change the trans seal and check the idler bearing. The bearing isnt going to like bouncing around like that so I wouldnt be suprised if that is shot also. Look inside the trans and make sure there isnt metal like mentioned above. If that was driven that way for a period of time the center main bearing in the trans could be shot. Good luck if the bolts fell out and you dont see metal it should be a quick fox for you.

Well, looks like one bolt broke off and the other is non-existent on the carrier bearing. Going to pull the axle out on Tuesday and have a buddy thats going to lend me to tools to drill the bolt out. I'll be replacing the inner CV boot also since it looks like it got cut open. I'll check things out tranny side too to make sure.

No metal shavings so looks like I may have dodged a bullet there. Previous owner also had the wrong oil seal in since it didn't have the metal ring, it was all rubber.

Now.. any tips on getting the oil seal in without dropping the transfer case? A soda can was the right size but it didn't make enought contact with the lower part of the seal so it keeps going in crooked.

A simple NO would have sufficed :p

Anyway, I ended up just dropping the transfer case and tapped the axle seal right in. Bolted everything up and so far so good. Thanks for all the previous replies everyone. :thumb:
