I'm 19 recently bought a 1990 talon tsi awd as my first car. It came with a megan racing downpipe and that's it. It's super loud and I can't stand to make my neighbors suffer much longer. I'm really broke because I just bought the car and I can't for the life of me even find an ebay catback system for under $350. Local shop quoted me "a few hundred bucks" for a 3 inch straight pipe. Where are all the cheap ebay systems? Please someone help me out.

Check amazon, there was one for 180 or so that might be able to get you by.
I just got done looking under all exhaust parts for the 1990 talon and 1990 gsx. Only thing I found was this cheap bosal and I'm not even sure if that's gonna fit my downpipe and where it's gonna end up with flanges on both sides.

i have 3" buschur downpipe, 3" megan evo resonator (cat deleted), and 3" thermal r&d cat-back, and its surprisingly quiet at idle

Are you only looking for new? I'd look around here on the classifieds or your local Craigslist.
I honestly have been for probably two weeks now. I guess I just need to be patient.

I checked the thermal r&d website and there wasn't a retailer within 250 miles of me.

You will need a test pipe in place of the cat ... sense the cat back is from behind the cat and the downpipe only goes to the front of the cat.
I would personaly take the muffler shop up on there offer , go to the local junkyard / salvage yard / pick n pull ...and look around I have found Apexi , Dyno Max , Borla , all for very cheap ... 25 dollars in most cases. Have the muffler shop use that muffler, it is better then nothing

The downpipe won't really make your exhaust louder.. technically, it can, because you're allowing more volume of exhaust through but the major contributor is the rest of the piping (Megans are 2.5" neck, 3" exit), any resonators for tuning pitch, and the muffler.
Want quiet? You have to lessen the flow and change the frequency. A 12-18" long resonator as well as a chambered/baffled muffler will kill quite a bit of volume and shift it lower in the frequency band. Keep in mind, the lower you go, the easier it will travel through walls, so the resonator is a catch-22.
Lose any boom tube you have and go baffled/chambered.

I hear you but my main concern is that the exhaust is right under my seat currently. Secondary concern is that my neighbors hate me.

Yeah, Sorry guys this wasn't a "what exhaust is quiet" it was more of a.. what can get me a full exhaust so that people stop hating me. I run a full 2-3/4 inch exhaust with nothing but an 18" resonator and I vibrate windows in towns, but cops don't bother me.

If you can find a flange that at least mates to your downpipe you can point it down and away for the time being with a muffler attached, I did that with a moroso spiral flow muffler I had laying around with my camaro when I was still trying to get my exhaust situation sorted out. All I did was weld the muffler to a flange that mated to the DP, bolt it on and bam, quieter exhaust for less then 50 bucks, it's not pretty and I don't recommend it as a permanent solution, but it'll get you by.

If you can't weld or don't have access to one, a decent muffler shop (or even metal fab shop) shouldn't charge you more then 10 bucks a weld, your local speed shop will have various sized flanges and then pick a bullet style muffler to act a test pipe

Thanks, that sounds like a very simple solution I didn't even think of. I could just place a muffler on the end of my downpipe. Now I'm wondering if they make mufflers that would bolt directly to my downpipe.

Dont bet on it, almost all will come with just the advertised size piping with no flange attached, I work at a salvage yard and kind of "make" things work where they shouldn't. bullet mufflers, such as the moroso spiral flow i mentioned maintain a small footprint underneath the car so it won't touch anything (IE your driveshaft) and will fit in the stock exhaust tunnel, be wary of the cheap cherry bombs as they might make things worse, just crawl underneath and measure bolthole to bolthole and the exhaust pipe diameter.

just saw this on facebook:

Cat back system has had resonator deleted it's in good condition still on the car, I'd like local pickup only don't wanna try to ship it pic for attention
That's exactly what I want and he's actually not too far from me. I'm not a member of the group however and don't have $250 until payday.

This is a perfect opportunity for a side-exit exhaust with a Cherry Bomb. Your neighbors will love it.

But seriously, if you can get the muffler shop to do you a straight pipe that you can slap a cheapo muffler on when you get the money, that's probably your best bet.

I just went under there and checked and there's basically no room for anything not the size of a cherry bomb. The down pipe is around 1 inch from the driveshaft and the driveshaft gets further as distance increases. I could get a J pipe and have it cut so it only angles down a little bit but then which small profile muffler would you recommend?

Search for decent bullet style mufflers, like I had said before I had a spiral flow in there with no issues and that did a pretty decent job of quieting things down. there is decent room for someone with some fabrication skills, if you took it back to the shop and just asked them for a low profile muffler just off the downpipe it shouldn't be very expensive for less then 2 feet of pipe and a few welds

Whoops missed tmoneys post, sorry. Yeah I would absolutely go with that megan setup, just message the guy and explain the situation, you're not the only one that runs on a limited budget and the guy might understand.

Srs ebay. I'm running a hacked 3" cat back for my 92, with a 3" megan DP and its actually very quiet, even under the whip. I swapped out the srs fart can muffler for a straight through to a 5" resonated MBRP tip (diesel). It has the two resonators, and a cat delete pipe still, but it's quite nice. Deep, throaty rumble and picks up a little pitch when revving it out.

For the money, ebay systems are hard to beat, unless you need that "ive-got-this-brand-name-exh" being factor.

Other brand-name exhausts do come with a quality and longevity factor, but you have to look at the feasibility factor.

PlanZero found you a good one.

This is tough. I see what you mean, not a lot of cheap parts out there compared to 2g parts. I have a big story of my own, but seems like you just have to wait it out. If somebody is gona hate you because you don't have money to fix something then oh well they'll get over it once you get it fixed. Just tell your neighbors your saving up to get it fixed, and theres nothing you can do for now.

-rant (hope it make you feel better)
I've been getting screwed for 3 months straight here with my cars. Every day I go to work I could damage the valves in my camaro because of bad spark plugs + my exhaust broke at the cat again after I payed to get it repaired, and I can't drive my talon at the moment because the trans is gone bad, and some suspension bolts sheered, and now I gotta buy a entire new lower control arm just to get it moving again which i cant afford. And I had to sell almost everything just to make few months of rent, and I somehow have to make 900$ in about 24 days, plus pay a ticket i got like 2 weeks ago. Your not the only one out there man, don't think people are gona hate you.
