Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

Look, it's either going to be one of two things - your headgasket or the seals in your turbo. An easy check for a leaking headgasket would be to drain your oil and coolant into two seperate clean containers. If you see any coolant in your oil or oil in your coolant it's a good indication of a damaged headgasket. Again, it's important to drain your oil and coolant into clean containers so you can easily tell if one is contaminating the other. Or you can do a compression check. :p

Take your intake pipe off the turbo and check for shaft play. To check for shaft play just grab the compressor wheel and wiggle it side to side and in and out. If you can move the wheel excessively (over 1mm or so) then it's too much play. If your seals are leaking in your turbo you should see oil either in the intake pipe or there will be a film of oil inside the compressor cover (before the compressor wheel). If that's the case then you know it's your turbo's seals.

Explain to me the loss of power steering though. Thats seems odd. Can you turn the car on and let it run for a bit. Smell anything weird, what rpms are you running at, any weird sounds at all? I would suspect a bad alternator just off of ALL the symptoms you have, but i really don't think you had ALL of them. :thumb:

Sounds like he stalled ... if he didn't come to a complete stop he could have popped the clutch without even realizing it (starting the car again).

The idle seems to be slightly lower than 750, the smell is like something is burning sort of, and it just happened while sitting at a turn waiting to turn... then as soon as i let the clutch out and started driving its like everything catched and it all worked again

Shit it could be your valve seals. My car burns oil because of having bad ones. Check your compression is probably the first thing i would do now. Then drain your oil and coolant.

Check your power steering fluid, maybe it sprung a leak causing you to loose power steering.
In effect leaked on the alt, causing it not to charge your battery. In turn you were just driving on your battery, witch would not provide you with enough juice. And would cause your power lose.

Sounds like it could be anything if it's just power lose. So if your sure you lose power steering I would start with that. And the alt probably caused the dash light's since it went away when you accelerated.

And the smell of course burning power steering fluid. And the smoke, may be coming from under the hood blowing back, not the tell pipe.

Alright so I just got done checking out the car from top to bottom:
All fluid levels are fine
The spark plugs looked fine it just appeared as if a couple were slightly more bent on that end piece then the others.
Compression test came up 0 on every cylinder, BUT i can start the car and the engine actually runs and idles fine (maybe i have a bad tester i dunno)
The turbo I am sure is shot as when checking for shaft play i can move it quite a bit and when the car is idling it just sounds like its broken cus it makes a horrible chattering noise...

Its just weird i think that the engine runs fine but the test came up 0 on compression...

So for now i guess I will replace the turbo, do an oil change, and then see if anything else is still going wrong...

i would redo the compression check. I've personally never seem one come up with completely 0 across the bored. Either you didn't have the tester completely screwed in or its broken. You should see some type of compression. When i had all the rings shot in my one car i still had 50 across the board. I would redo the test and have someone help you to make sure its not broken or your not doing it wrong

Something went wrong with the compression test because it wouldnt run a 0psi across the board. Curious why a few plugs were bent though? I would look into that and at least get new plugs. A bad turbo would have blue smoke too. If youre running a t-25, I know when i had a 2g, mine had quite a bit of play but functioned perfectly, no smoke. Nothing too excessive but there was more play than youre typical 14b imho

Trust me you can tell its broken when you start the car the noise it makes is like the blades have all been chopped off and are rattling around in there LOL

Not hijacking the forum but I've had the same problem
I have a 1995 talon tsi automatic!

I was driving, took a left turn, and my car shuts off all of a sudden.
My drive belt, (the long skinny belt) just snapped off!
The car lost alternator charge, heat, temp went really high, no power steering, volts went from 13.8 to 11 to 8.

Idk what happened... And idk even how to fix it, I'd get it towed, but my car is lowered and won't go on a truck :notgood:

Anyone who can offer some info to me about this, and maybe some belt diagrams for it so I know WTF i'm doing. My first post on here was supposed to be saying how much I love it, and then this happens. The belt made squealing on start ups for 10 seconds if it helps any. Driving in the snow it squealed too, as well as lowered my volts from 13.8 to 12.5 and would go up and down from 12.5 to 14 and down again.

What could it be??

Can you guys provide any links to the belt diagrams or anything?
I have no clue how you even go about swapping belts off on these engines, my haynes manual doesnt have it either :(

Hey everyone. Just to give a little history on what ive been up to lately - i recently encountered some white smoke that would appear after going into full boost on my t25. Well did some research and well i determined it was just a bad turbo, well ok i replaced it with the t28 i picked up and i just took it for a test drive today (today being jan. 19th) and the SAME thing is happening with my t28. The performance is a little lazy i think but im just use to my t25 im guessing. But my question is - Is it a bad turbo once again? or could it be something else? The guy i bought it from said it was a good turbo, it had a little side to side play but there was no in and out shaft play. My car has been down for nearly a month due to finding a darn turbo and now i might have to spend money on another one :notgood:

White smoke is typically coolant, not oil, which has a bluish tint to the smoke it produces. It might be a bad headgasket that is allowing coolant into one of your cylinders, it would also explain the lazy performance. Do a compression test to see what your numbers are.

x3. I also agree and bet it's your head gasket that went bad. Do a compression check and that will tell you what's going on.
