White smoke and sputter after dipstick popping

so my dipstick popped out and shot almost all the oil out of the motor... i changed the oil and now when i start it its sputtering and spitting white smoke from the exhaust and hot-side i have no idea but am doing a compression test tomorrow...

Change the pcv valve, get a new oem one.

I capped my dip stick tube, clamped down my oil cap, and puked oil out of my valve cover (literally everywhere) from a bad pcv valve

I can just imagine that... so how would a pcv effect sputtering and white smoke... ?

You weren't really specific about the symptoms

Misfire at idle? Does it idle fine?

Sputter only on when accelerating? Only in boost?

My first check item would be the spark plugs. See if they are covered in oil, if they are replace them to see if it cures the sputter at idle

Second would be to compression test it. If the compression test is good it could be the valve seals

Does the car smoke all of the time, only after it's warmed up?

It could be a blown turbo, it could be blown piston ring, it could be a bad valve seals.

You'll probably have to check a few things in the engine bay to find some clues on what caused the smoking

Misfire, lack of power I guess like when I bring it up in rpm it's sluggish 3/4 throttle = like 4k rpm on neutral... not normal

It's a misfire at idle theirs no shaft play and the white smoke is like once it warms up and u rev it

Go to the parts store for new copper plugs and a compression tester. Also pick up some carb cleaner

Pull the pcv valve out and clean it, it's a check valve to prevent boost going into the crank case and valve cover.

Pull the plugs and inspect them for wet oil.

Compression test and replace old plugs with new

White smoke is coolant / water burning. Not oil. It sounds like you have a blown headgasket. Compression test / leak down will confirm. In regards to the dip stick shooting out, that could be a piston ring / piston issue. If its blowing oil out the dipstick that bad out of no where, I would definitely be inspecting the pistons and rings for issues.

Start with the white smoke. Usually when multiple problems appear at one like that, figuring out one leads to the other.

I with Chrysler kid.. He just needs to check the basics first before assuming the motor is blown. Id check timing marks, it may have slipped and caused the issue in the first place. Check compression after verifying timing. If timing is off, of course you cant trust the compression readings, so check timing first. If its good, compression test. If thats good, you are lucky and its something little. If not, you will have to determine where the failure occurred. It may very well be blowing past the rings. Who knows until the tests are done.

I think this is premature. From the ops description this isn't that drastic. Smoke could be grayish and presumed white.
OP was the car perfect before you did an oil change? You did nothing else?

It seems pretty rare that white smoke out the exhaust ever turns out to be anything else. That is, like you said, if it is truly white. Premature to say its a blown head gasket? Yeah. Premature to have him do a compression test / leak down? Probably not. I guess me personally I just always rule out the worst case scenario things first because they are usually pretty obvious. I can see where maybe you thought I was jumping to conclusions though. I worded it pretty badly

It's ok, during the day the smoke will always look white ish, at night with a flashlight in the tail pipe is the best way to tell what color it is.

Symptoms would be more severe, and modifications list would be longer to make me feel it was something more severe like a head gasket. Usually symptoms would be slow to show up, and have a gradual onset with multiple problems.

He could have just left his oil cap loose and it pushed the oil out of the valve cover onto the manifold. I would want him to answer a few more questions before I jumped onto something anymore severe than a turbo

No offense, but I have to disagree with you on that one. I have had head gaskets blow to kingdom come and have every imaginable symptom at once, and I have had them blown, yet the only symptom was a slight coolant loss with no smoke. All it takes is one time of not noticing the car overheating or a previous bad install of a head gasket and you can blow one. Doesn't necessarily have to have many mods.

A sluggish acceleration, smoke, and shooting a dipstick to the point where he said there was little oil left in the car usually isn't a good sign. But like turbo2g said, no one will know unless he comes back with more info.

also cyl was full of oil.. so rings
picking up another motor next week along with a 1gb so hopes i can drop that motor in mine and rebuild the one thats in mine right now

What's your point arguing with me giving advice to check the simple stuff before jumping head first into worst case scenario. You can argue all day with me about how you blew your old motors up I'm just giving general advice to trouble shoot..

I'm not saying you are wrong to suggest the possibility of something smaller. I was just disagreeing with your statements saying "the symptoms would be more severe" or "His mod list would need to be longer" to suspect a head gasket or piston ring issue. There is no direct correlation between a mod list and a blown engine. And my point about my past motors was the symptoms are not always severe. Either way, Checking the small or big things first is just a matter of preference. The big things are usually easier to spot, so I tend to start with them if they are a possibility.

OP sorry to hear that the engine is toast. Glad you have the "fix it" mentality.
