Quick question.. I just pulled the dipstick tube out of the block to transfer to my new block. The oil ring at the bottom that seats the tube in the block, is it any old o-ring or is there an OEM part. Don't want to just pop this thing back in and find out it leaks.

Thanks

I replaced mine with just a regular o-ring I had in my toolbox at the time and haven't had any problems.:) This has been about four years although I don't daily drive the car.

Thanks for will take care of replacing it.

Thread revival...

I just called Mitsu and they want just over $5 (plus tax) for the stupid o-ring. Does anyone have the actual size of the correct o-ring that I can use to replace the one I have? I just got a new dipstick tube to replace my old one and I don't want to re-use the old o-ring.

(I know I can use any o-ring that fits but I want to use the best/correct fit one)

an o-ring is an o-ring ( a subdivision of my company makes strictly o rings of all sizes) any depot store, harbor freight carries that stuff.. in multi packs.

You can get that o ring on STM.

I know I can get the o-ring from some of the vendors online... I forgot to order it when I bought the tube :ohdamn: but I don't want to wait to get the new dipstick on since I am leaking oil from that area.

This is true but I wanted to see if anyone has the exact size of the o-ring. I don't want to take the old one and try to find an o-ring based on something that may possibly be 20 years old.

Thanks for the quick replies though!

Ahh, but an oring can be made of so many different types of materials: nitrile, epdm, neoprene, silicone, viton, teflon- just to name a few, and the type you choose is entirely dependant on your application. In this instance, you want an oring made of nitrile or viton. Silicone will not hold up to oil in under any circumstance, nor will neoprene or epdm.

Oh, and I believe the oring is 2mm x 10mm. 2mm is the "cross- section", or thickness, and 10mm is the "I.D.", or inside diameter of the oring. Could easily be 9mm I.D. though

Ok thanks for the info guys. I am going to see if I can find an o-ring that matches the description of the one that kchaazz described and see how well it fits on the dipstick tube. I have class tonight but I am going to do that tomorrow and get the new dipstick tube and dipstick on my car :)

O-rings are weird little bastards. You'd be surprised at how close tolerances are on some of them; there's usually a fine line between sealing and not sealing, especially in a heated environment.

If you can't get the correct size (based on published numbers or by measuring a new one), I would order the factory OEM one and do the temporary RTV fix if you have to until it arrives. Otherwise, you may be right back to this point in a day or two anyway. :)

This is a good point.. I just wanted to get this done without spending any extra money or waiting for the thing to get shipped. When I called Mitsu and asked them about sizes and such he guy told me that there were none listed... that is halfway why i brought this thread back to see if anyone could vouch for the correct size. I guess I might have to break down and find one that fits and do the temp fix and order one... *sigh*

That is odd since ASA lists "9" (millimeters, of course) as the part size. While it is easy enough to change the little guy, it is smarter to get the right part and be done with it.

Its a good point but I just have a hard time justifying $5 plus tax for an o-ring haha. I know it's only $5 but seriously... Oh well. I guess I just go get it and swap out my tubes. Is it worth putting the silicone on the new o-ring for the extra seal?
