Which / What Oil Should I Use? [Merged]

Thicker=better with higher mileage, obviously. Im gonna stay with mobil 1 since its been in my car since 92 and my head looks brand new still after 156,000. Where do you guys find 20w50 anyways? I only find 15w50 at autozone and advanced. just wonderin

I tried 15w 50 Mobil 1 "turbo car applications" according to them, and didn't like it very well. The car wanted to knock and pull timing initially way back if I took off immediately when I first started up the car cold in the morning. Went back to 10w 30 and problem gone.

I think I am goign to try some Royal Purple. Anyone every dyno tested Mobil 1 syth vs a different oil? I know Royal Purple advertises HP gains with there oil. Take this with a grain of salt, but on Horsepower TV i believe it was, they first dyno'd a stock or almost stock 00 SS ..base dyno was 302 rwhp. They then added all Royal purple additives (oil, tranny fluid, etc) and ran the dyno again. They came up to 310 rwhp.

I switched to royal purple 10 w 30 with a MITSUBISHI oil filter (for those of you that have tick like I did). I think the filter is the more important part. It seemed to run much smoother as well with the rp at idle.

I heard the fram and OEM filter have this type of built in one way check valve that when you turn off your car it won't let the oil go back through the filter, and that this is better for cars.

If you have to go heavier than 10W-40 I think you need to step back and consider a rebuild. If you don't have to go heavier then don't do it.

That's my take.

Back in the day people would put goo in their engines (looks like honey) to stop leaks and ticks. Seems like a bandaid to me. At that point your engine is whipped. Rebuild it and enjoy it more without the worries. Who wants to drive around with an engine full of honey and molases anyway?

I just put in maxlife 10w 30 with ZMAX complete engine cleaner. runs smooth try it sometime, ZMAX has the cleaner in a kit that has it for the engine oil, trans oil, and gas for 39.95

I used to used Mobil1 10w-30, but I just switched to amsoil turbo formulated 10w-30 w/ an amsoil oil filter.. Didn't cost THAT much, but ohh soo worth it.. My car sounded different the second I started it up after changing the oil, and now I don't hear lifter tick and it's startin to get colder in the mornings still no tick.. great #@%#@%#@%#@%.

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and a PureOne Filter and I still get lifter tick.

I'm thinking of trying a Factory filter.

LIke i said i use the valvoline maxlife 10w 30, i have heard no tick or jsut havent listend close enough to hear anything, i think the zMAX helped we'll see what happens though, the car sounds great, idels nicley

The fram ToughGuard filters have the one way check valve in them, yes, but if the filter gets clogged then it has a bypass system in it to let the oil go through unfiltered. The OEM filter has the same anti-backflow valve but keeps filtering the oil no matter how dirty it gets.

The reg. fram filters don't have the oneway valve, I don't think. And aren't recommended for turbo cars by Fram. O'reilly's or walmart maybe, but not by fram.

this is true about the OEM filter....the reason it's better, is so that when you start the engine, all the oil isn't in the oil pan, leaving everything up top somewhat unprotected

 Fram filters are cheaply made...and our cars are picky enough as it is, ... i wouldnt risk it

still contemplating which oil to use after the 6bolt swap.... since i live in BFE, it'll probably be Mobile1... would like to try amsoil though

a while back i heard about mixing 3qts. of 10w30 and the rest 20w50...anyone have any experiences with this method??

im using castrol gtx 20w-50 in my car now to keep my oil pressure up and it does a good job of it from what I can tell.

also I wont be using anything other then the OEM oil filter for now on..

I highly recomend LUCAS for any oil change. It will increase MPG while increasing HP and decreasing engine wear. USE IT. You find it a most part stores.

amsoil 20w-50....but i get kinda bad mpg...so im switching to 10w-40....amsoil's imho is the best stuff...read some info on it and been using it ever since....

if you have lifter tick the oil isnt necessarily your problem. Mobile 1 oil is what i've used on all THREE of my GSX's, i had lifter tick on one of them so i took them out, blasted them clean with an air gun, oiled em up a little, put em back in, and no more lifter tick. They get "gunked" up. Oh did i mention that the previous owner of that GSX used non-synthetic, at 70k i switched to the mobile one. Drove that car to 129k before i sold it and it didnt have the problem again in that period.

Actually I did that on accident the last oil change, I grabbed my 5 quarts of oil (Castrol syntec blend 10w30). I then went home changed the oil and then looked and 2 were 20w50 I was like WTF! but kinda shrugged it off as no big deal because it didnt really change anything except keep my oil pressure up some. As I am having the same problem as Larry(with my oil press) so I will probably do this everytime now. Car ran fine with the mix and I use a mobil 1 filter by the way. Corey

i heard that also...i personally like to use valvoline max life in my car because it conditions all those seals and whatnot...the first time i put it in one of my cars, i could instantly tell the difference in how the car ran.

I will second the z-max too...i put that in my car and it definitely made a huge difference.

what is lucas? an additive

Yes, it's like a thick goo type stuff, that you add in with your oil change...it is supposed to lubricate internal parts and reduce friction and condition seals...it works really well, i have also used it
