Which / What Oil Should I Use? [Merged]

It's funny how much people pay for motor oil.

The previous person who ownd my car ran REDLINE oil in the car only.
When I got and saw the price of Redline oil> I said for get it.

I used mobil on every one of my sprts cars and never had a problem.

Mobil 1 makes my lifters tick. I use nothing but royal purple in my car.

Interesting, M1 10-30 makes my lifters tick also. I'm going to try M1 20-50 and see if that helps.

i have 90k+ on my car, i run 20/50 with no probs...i hear if u run full synthetic it makes the engine leak...what happens is over time when you put in regular oil it leaves deposits and actually forms a "seal" and when you put in synthetic it removes the deposits and causes leakage...check up on it

If you don't have any leaky seals it wouldn't be a problem.

Maybe next summer I will try 20w 50 to see how it is.

I just switched to synthetic at 118k. Gonna see if there are any leaks. Anywayz, i used Pennzoil 10/30 and the Mobil 1 oil filter. Did plugs also, just the normal Densos.

From Syn Blend, I switch to Castrol Full Syn. 10w30 few months ago. Now my oil leak even worse:mad:

i got oil all over my turbo, around the engine area and the whole front bottom of carOMG

What the best oil to get over this problem? ..would Redline, royal purp, or Amsoil solve that leak and tick noise?

I have Redline in the gear box and diff. the previos owner use Redline oil.
I switch it to Mobil One 10w-30.

I don't have any leaks in my 92 but I have really low miles on the car.

Don't know about the tick, but no synthetic oil will solve your leak problem. Maybe you could try a thicker formulation (20W50), but I doubt that would work either.

And I second (or third, I don't remember) Amsoil. But I use the 10W40 weight.

No oil is going to solve a leaking problem. Fixing the seals will solve the leaking problem.

Hey, how long between changes on Mobil 1 are you going??

I have a 98 Spyder GS-T Granny trans
No mods other than
Magnacore Wires
NGK plugs

mobile 1 10w30 here. Our walmart just got the 5qt jugs for 17.88 :)

For those of you who get lifter tick, what oil filter do you use? You migt want to try a puralator pure one filter. I have been using this combo (mobile1 pure1) for the entire time I have owned the car and have never had lifter tick.

I use mobil1 15w-50. I always thought it was 20w-50 but i had to get another quart the other day and all they had was 15w-50. i guess i need to quit smokin that shyt. at least the price dropped $.50. now at $4.49 again! yeah

On my trip to Oshkosh this year for a big airplane "convention" I learned a LOT. Here is a clip I posted to another board shortly after. Good info all about synthetics and it really clarifies those rumors about the new Mobil1 etc.

...

Synthetic War:
Synthetic[noun]:something resulting from synthesis rather than occurring naturally.

Pretty obvious right? Well, not necessarily. At least, Mobil1 and Castrol didn't agree on it.

Mobil1 took Castrol to court b/c of the way that Castrol makes Syntec. Mobil1 makes their synthetic by starting w/ natural gas and working it into some methyLOLyolyoxynfree crap and then works that into some other magic morphoLOLomoo crap, and then, that makes the base for their synthetic. When they're done, the crap they have is completely synthetic, meaning it is a completely man made substance and cannot be found naturally.

Castrol on the otherhand, takes the Group 3 base stock crude and refines it down until it's really clean and pure and calls this synthetic. This stuff really isn't a man made substance (aka synthetic) other than the fact that a man made it cleaner.

Mobil1's way of making a synthetic is more expensive and of course they don't want their product being sold as the same thing as Castrol's product. So, they go to court over it. And the court says that Castrol is making a "synthetic" and that they can advertise it as such. AND, they don't have to tell consumers that there's a difference.

Sounds pretty bad right? Well, not really. The Castrol stuff works almost just as good as the Mobil1 stuff. And nobody really cares b/c the Synthetic part of the motor oil market is about 6%. Not sure how much of that 6% Mobil1 has, but I'm guessing it's getting smaller now. Don't worry tho, Mobil1 is still making their Synthetic oil the same way it always has.

Tri-Synthetic:
Well, it means what it says. 3 synthetics actually make up the mixture. Why 3? Why not. It sounds good. Really, it all boils down to what each PART does and how it reacts in the engine. When Mobil1 makes all that crap from natural gas like I described above, they end up w/ a base synthetic. This stuff actually causes seals to shrink. So, they have to add another synthetic to the stuff that makes seals expand. This is true for every synthetic oil made this way. They have at least two parts; one that expands seals, and one that contracts seals. Hopefully they balance out. Not really sure about the extra 3rd part that Mobil1 has added into the mix, but I'm sure it's to keep things "normal" inside the motor.

I got all of this info from a Phillips 66 guy who gave an hour long seminar about motor oils. Actually, his "speach" lasted about 15min and the rest was questions from the audience (about 20 of us). It was supposed to be about airplane oils, but we got him off on the synthetic discussion and he told us all the dirt.

Hope that helps a little. Sorry it's so long.

Now I've got some Q's for yall. On my daily beater (FWD Laser) I typically run Castrol 5w30. When I switched over to M1 10w30 I noticed that the oil pressure reads lower on the factory gauge. I know that's probably not the most accurate gauge, but it does read a difference. And I have switched back and forth and noticed the difference repeatedly. Any of you have a REAL gauge and noticed a difference? I've thought about using the M1 20w50 but I wasn't sure if that was a little TOO thick. No problems out of it? How many miles w/ the stuff?
