Ball bearing or journal bearing? I have a 1990 tsi and its going to be my everyday driver/ weekend warior. I want around 500 at the wheels, so what turbo would be most durable, and have better response. Is there a big difference in the 2?

Ball bearing is usually better but not rebuildable while a journal beraing turbo can be rebuilt. So it depends on what you call "better"

Even the HX35 can put down those numbers with slightly better spool times. These are journal bearings. Most of the larger brand turbos that can achieve 500+ are ball bearing though.

borg warner S362 extended tip it right at $ 1,500 but it wiil put out 40 psi at 4000 rpm efichetly thats what i have on mine and its good for about 670 wheel horsepower its journal bearing and has 1 year warranty even if you purposly break it ! o yeah its T3 in and 3" v band out extreme psi has it for $ 1199

Listen, hitting 500 isn't an easy task, just getting a bigger turbo isn't going to help you very much, probably mess you up more than help, if you build up around the turbo, simple bolt ons, upgrading the fuel, also engine management is key. the money you spend on that turbo is not a good investment if you don't have the essentials to run it properly. But good luck anyway, hopefully you can learn from others mistakes and not your own. :thumb:

I just got back from iraq so i got 10 to 15 grand to put in this car, almost everything is going to be aftermarket. so ill have the engine to support 500+ hp.

Listen to this dsm908, very wise information he has there

ebay usally has nockoffs !

But they don't have holset knockoffs yet, or at least I haven't seen them. They're cheap used, $100-$300. Then add another $80 for a rebuild kit.

Then put that other $9.5k - 14.5k to good use elsewhere.

thanks fwdmaster, well see you weren't informing us of your financial info, well than turbo should still be last of your issues, and first find a good machine shop to build up the motor, if your trying to get 500, you should build up that bottom end buddy. as for you wanting it to be a DD, good luck again :thumb: LOL, mine is a DD, and i have a SC61 turbo in mine, spool time is relatively quick, but good over all production throughout. but turbos are a big decision, u need to know what ## trying to do with it. what is your over all goal with this car

My over all goal is to build a reliable dsm that can handle a beating :D.

how much power can the sc61 handle and where can i find out info on it?

yes i gree but it can be a dd im building mine for dd and 10's so you need to no your overall goal cause you dont want to buy a 500 hp turbo and then hit 500 and then want 600 cause then you need a better turbo and any other parts resurch what you want and brand names see what fits you best if you cant find anything on it then come back here were more than happy to help fellow dsm'ers and yes i no you just want to spend spend spend ! the bigger price is not always the better part so search for atleast a week!!!!

You don't need to worry about how much power the turbo can handle. If you're thinking that big, you probably need to replace your block's internals, especially since you want it to be reliable. 6-bolts can take a beating (so can 7s), but only for so long.

the hole bottom end is getting replaced and the block is getting sent out next week to a machine shop.

use the stock crank and do not cut it and if 10k or more has to be cut off of it buy a new one the stock ones will hold 900 hp there forged hardened and nitride coated factotory have every thing weight macht and ballanced i would suggest eagle rods and wiseco pistons have crank shot peend
