Resolved which starter plate to use

Solution
Use the starter plate that was meant for the transmission, the key to the plates is starter location in relation to the flywheel. I got away with aFWD plate on my AWD swapped 2g with 6 bolt engine for a litle while but wondered why i was eating startersevery other month, swapped to a 6 bolt plate and no isses snce (and i was having these issues even after modding the FW plate to allow the starter to sit close to the AWD flywheel, it was just letting it move away after a while and causing issues and constant maintenance to the starterr)
post a picture of your starter plate and your block, together and separate. best way for me to tell you what to do.

2g awd tranny
Auto or manual? 'Cause the starter plates differ. 2g AWD M/T = MD167356, 2g AWD A/T = MD194962. In both cases, the last three digits (356 and 962) are stamped into the respective plates to help identify.

doesnt kiggly have a kit for it? im new but just had to buy one for my 6 bolt to 7bolt tranny.

Yeah, for an auto trans. When swapping motors, good rule of thumb for starter plates: use the one that corresponds to the transmission you are using.

Don't want to sound like a smartass, but how do you know what starter plate is in there? Are you going by what someone told you? The metal doesn't lie, there's a reason things aren't lining up, you need to find out why.

"everything lines up except one of the starter holes" Well, then everything doesn't line up, does it? You need to find out why.

My bet is it has a FWD starter plate on it which would angle one bolt hole away from the crank. The starter plate has to line up with the starter bolt hole on the transmission.

A couple links to help out.

If installed already I would say you will be pulling it back out.
Get a picture of what bolt hole doesn't line up.

Solution
I thought about doing exactly what you did Turboglenn when I did my awd swap but after reading about that happening to you I decided to go ahead and order the right flywheel plate.
Just so the OP is clear on what Glenn did to use a fwd plate was he modified the fwd starter plate so he could reposition the starter to the awd position. The problem is the large hole in the plate the starter fits into after modifying is elongated and allows the starter to move away from the flywheel after several times of the starter engaging. You just can't tighten the bolts enough to prevent the motor from forcing itself away from the flywheel. The only solution to this is if the starter bolts were the positioning guide instead of the plate.

Well you were right, it's a fwd plate. Me and my buddy are working on our cars in the same garage and somehow they got switched. Didn't think to check his until after the motor was already in. Oh we'll, guess I get more practice taking the tranny off and on :) thanks for the help guys

Been there and done that. :ohdamn: Every time I am putting an engine in I always put the starter on before I drop everything in. Paranoid I guess because I always check the part number first anyways. Nothing wrong with a double check to make sure I don't F it up. Wish I could have helped you out before you got it put in.

I assume your buddy tried to put his starter on and was like WTH?? How did I end up with the same problem as you?

excellent explanatin, and exactly what i was battling, i almost got cut off on my "warranty replacement " number of starters on my account at the auto parts store before i got it swapped (or shoudl i say beofre i figured out the plate was the sole cause)

By the wayt the starters are all th same from what i've found, i've taken several DSM starters from "free" ahnd me outs with broken parts here and there and made them into good starteres and aside fro the FWD being longer than the normal AWD starter they all mix and match and work when combined with the correct starter plate... now i'm not sure on auto starters cause i've never known any of the ones 've gotten to be from an auto, bu 1g and 2g 5 speeds are all the same FWD and AWD with monor differnces but interchangable

Awesome, I was wondering about that as well so I don't screw anything else up. Thanks!
