Which speakers to install to the bottom of the back seats?

I want to leave the back seats in, but install speakers where you would sit. That way it is still possible to sit on a pillow or with a child seat for baby.

Anyone seen this done on a DSM?

So basically, I'd have to pull out the back seats, cut a hole, and put the speakers in there and put it back on. I wonder what speakers would go in there good? Something kind of low profile..?

I am not an audio install master by any means, but I would love to try this. Any suggestions and links are appreciated.

what do you mean, sit directly on the speaker or have the seat over top, if you have the seat over the top i would suggest investing it some metal grills so the subs are not being touched by the seat, and low profile subs would be a good investment for the amount of room the will be, i wouldnt get the pioneer ones i had one but the voice coil wiring came loose so im not sure, go with the kicker ones, well anyways good luck

I meant in the bottom of tha back seat.

Here is a photochopped pic I made as an example.

I think I want full range, not subs but still not 100% on that. Also, not sure how much room there is for the install, I mean it'd be great if someone could toss a pillow on top of the speaker grill and sit on it, and leave room for car seats for kids.

Anyone have set of speakers to suggest?

I may pull the seat out this holiday and check it out.

well, let me know what you find, why would you put full range in on a spot close by those pillar speakers that work so good? i would suggest something small like 10's with a metal grill that can support some weight, and use those pillar speakers for the rest of the sound spectrum

if you put the speakers in like in the photo if someone sits on them they will be ruined what im saying is you need a firm backing on speakers or resonance will beat your sound back, you will need a box, and second thin out the beat of the seat and put the speaker inside the seat with a grill so it can be sat on

i could see that as a show purpose ya it would be cool. but id rather not spend money for someone to literally LOL. i don't know just don't seem the smartest. but of course its possible anything is possible with time and money and resources. but either way good luck !

Well I don't think it would be expensive at all, and seats are cheap and easy to find.

Yeah I agree now; a 10" sub would be about right, instead of full range, plenty of spots for that already.

A few reasons I like this idea:

1. Leaves space in the rear for storage

2. Harder to steal

3. Cheap to do

4. Overall stock look and feel, can still seat 3-4 if needed

By the way, I am new to installing subs.

Let me ask a silly question; Is having the backs of the speakers touching the car metal a no-no? Seems like it might be.

In those cases do people usually cut a hole in the body or? Like in my case?

Do you put dynomat in place of he metal under the magnet in that case?

The car speakers should be able to touch the metal, but I wouldn't advise it, it might throw off the magnet in them, making them sound like complete garbage, I like the concept your thinking of, I was actually thinking the same thing one night, it sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Although, how are you going to make it so people can sit on them? Think about it, they might be fine with just the seat, but another 100-200 pounds pushing down on them, it might distort the sound, just a off the top of the head thought, but I'm sure you must have thought around this idea if your still thinking about doing it.

We do something similar with subwoofers directly under the seat. But putting in the actual cushion itself is a bad idea.

That's what I am asking; does speaker magnets touching the metal body drain the magnets or cause the magneteic energy to transfer to the car body? Or is it just watch out for the distorted sound it would cause from bumpiong/vibrating?

As far as people sitting in them, nobody ever sits in my back seats, we have other cars that seat more people. it's more of a "just in case" kinda thing, and if we have kids, I can put a car seat back there. But I was also saying I would throw a pillow on top of the seat if someone was siting on them, and just not use that sub while they were sitting on it or turn them both down/off. I don't have to have them on the whole time I drive the car.

Well which subs fit easily into the eclipse/talons under the back seat? That'd be quite stealthy.

As for the distortion, I know with my experience its not too bad if the magnet is touching, but with subs it might be, it would probably rattle like a mutha, so I'd try to keep it from touching at all costs.

And as for the pillow idea and what not, I like the whole concept alot I just don't know if its realistic, your just going to have to put alot more thought into it thats all, I'm sure theres a way to make it work, like they say, if theres a will theres a way. Let me know what you come up with.

hey, i've been thinking on this idea for a long time now and finally getting to it. i too want to keep my rear hatch space open for my hockey bag so i was thinking of taking the back seat out completly and making a custom sub box. couple subs, amps etc... anyone ever seen that? sorry im not trying to high jack. i just thought my idea was close to yours.... anyone done this???

Ok...now back on topic with the rear seats still in place... :D

And speakers in the seats is a bad idea BTW. Not only will they be destroyed, they'll also sound like crap before that due to no box volume, no baffling, no solid surround, etc.

hey thanks calan. looks good. i was thinking the same with the subs facing up and i would replace the back rest for the seats with an amp rack.

Nice work. Yeah of course wood will sound better, but hey;

A back seat for these cars is dirt cheap, there are so many non-running non turbo and even turbo carcasses. Even a "leather" backseat is cheap (it's called vinyl FYI). As far as sound quality, yes it would take some care to do it right, the same for the top that can have a cover strong enough and even padded disguised as the original seat. It all depends on your skills, dedication and time. Certainly is not expensive to experiment with though.

A back seat is really cheap for sure. I think I will just go buy a back seat and built it in the home, and when ready just swap it out. Frigging put the amp in under the seat as well. The whole seat will be higher when I am finished (obviously I think it would need to be lifted a touch). That's what I will do..maybe LOL

If I ever get around to it.
