Which Oil filter housing is better?

I looked up the differences in the 2 housings. Which housing is better? I am piecing this together by using 3 7bolts and 1 6bolt engines.. all of them are in pieces and I am officially confused which one when where.

When I was searching, I came across some diagrams that look like this. What book is this and where do i get it. The chiltons and Haynes are not this clear with parts and where they go.

Thanks. Both of these are from a 7bolt and they both fit my oil pump cover. Does it really matter which one I use? I honestly dont know where the Oil cooler goes if I do use the left one. But being its a GSX I assume it has one.
 
It just has two cooling lines that run to it from the front of the block. I believe that it's just to help get the oil to operating temps. So if you don't care about that then use the one without. Then you can just run the lines together to bypass. And there is no difference between a 7bolt in a gs-t and gsx.
 
The one on the left is a turbo OFH (with the oil cooler "sandwich" attached), the one on the right is a non-turbo housing and, as you said, both 7-bolt units. That diagram you have pictured is for a 91-94 turbo car (and can be found in the 1G service manual). Here's a 2G turbo diagram (which can be found in the 2G service manual):

So if you use the one on the left, it has the oil cooler attached and should be a simple matter of hooking up the coolant lines as in one of the diagrams shown in this thread (depending on which thermostat housing/water pipe setup you are using). If you use the one on the right, there is no oil cooler which can be okay (coolers are recommended, not required).

Thanks.. I will use the one with the sandwhich plate then. Was thinking IF need be, I could just plug those up until i figure out the oil cooler thing. Again, thanks for the input and advice from all.

As long as your doing this cap off the water lines that go to the housing. I had an OFH fail on me on one of my talons, it cracked and i had oil and coolant mixing. Went through everything before i figured out it was the OFH. They are there to keep oil temps down but i saw no adverse affects when i just capped them off.

He were just going to cap the coolant lines off, it would make more sense to run the one on the right. It would provide more space between the exhaust and oil filter.

I would personally choose to use the one with the cooler. They only tend to crack if you over-tighten the oil filter.
 
I was browsing the 2g manual and it implies that I use sealant for the oil pan gasket. I have used this before, but my kit came with a cork gasket. Should I use the gasket that came with the kit or use black sealant. Either is fine with me. I just curius what u guys think.

Also, same question for the rear main cover. I have the gray paper gasket. Manual doesnt say anything about a gasket, just to apply sealer. Opinions on these issues please. Thanks
 
Our oil pans never used a gasket so just sealant will be fine. Same goes for the rear main seal cover -- while 6-bolt engines used a gasket, 7-bolt engines did not and relied solely on sealant.
