Hey guys, sorry for asking another question that has been asked a million times, but I can't seem to find a straight answer. What are the ways of telling which head I have. I know the block is from a 96 gst from the VIN on it. I can say for sure that the head is the original one. The turbo and IM are both on there so looking at the ports really isn't an option. I bought it a long time ago and I'm trying to put all the pieces together. Thanks.

Check the exhaust manifold stud holes. If they are all the same size, it's a 6 bolt head. If the two on either end of the exhaust ports are slightly larger than those stud holes in the middle, it's a 7 bolt.

Sorry, unless you're looking to see if its the original 7 bolt head or not not if it's a 6 or a 7 bolt?

If so, disregard what I said.

Besides the outer exhaust mani. studs you can also use these 3 clues as reference:

The thermostat housings use different bolt patterns: the 1G in a triangular shape (three fasteners) and the 2G in a more rectangular shape (four fasteners). See pic 1 below for a visual: 2G on top, 1G on bottom. A second, easy identifier of a 2G head vs. a 1G head is the location of the hole on the exhaust side of the head, seen here: 2G VS 1G Easy Head id?. Third, a 2G head is differentiated from a 1G head because of the size of its intake runners. See pic 2 below: the top head is a 2G, the bottom is a 1G. Finally, 2G heads normally have a code "G6S" or "G6K" on the thermostat side where the 1G heads will have "2.0" (also pictured in pic 1 below) or simply "G6" with some numbers underneath it.

...Seems familiar: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/404339-how-distinguish-7-bolt-head-6-bolt-non-turbo-head-6-bolt-turbo-head.html#post152604685

So I'm 99% sure it's a 1g head from what you guys are saying.

So my next question is whats the difference between the 1g and 2g water pipes and why do I need to use the 1g one?

It's one step forward two steps back with this car. And thanks for answering the other question so fast.

Looks like you're right on the 1G head.

The difference between a 1G and 2G water pipe is simple: the 1G unit connects directly from the lower radiator hose to the water pump whereas a 2G unit runs from the 2G thermostat housing to the water pump. Their geometry is different; the 1G pipe curves downward on the inlet and the 2G curves up.

You must use the 1G water pipe with a 1G head because the 2G thermostat housing does not bolt up to the 1G head.
