Where to purchase fake cat? (test pipe that looks like cat)

pretty simple.. i have a 3" high flow cat already installed.. and i have a 3" test pipe ready to swap when i feel like being dangerous hah.. but i would ilke to have one of those fake cats so i feel more confident driving without a cat .. esp around cali.. is this something i could get a local exhaust shop to do? or are there places online to purchase these?

What i would suggest would be to take the housing of the cat off and weld it over the test pipe, this way it appears to be a cat.

why not just gut the cat?

Probably needs it for smog testing since he's in Cali.

Is there really much of a difference between a 3" cat and no cat?

As in gut the cat im assuming you mean hollow it out.

Whatever you do don't do this, gutting the cat does nothing but cause more backforce, because when the cat is gutted it causes turbulence, and slows down the flow of the exhaust gas.

If a gutted cat cause backforce and turbulence and slows down exhaust gas, why does a non-gutted cat not do the same or worse?

Because the channelled shapes formed by the catalyst surfaces straightens out the airflow through it. Without that stuff in there, the exhaust will expand to fill the chamber and come back together again at the exit side. Where the exhaust comes back together, it will be colliding with itself causing forces back towards the engine and towards the exiting exhaust. It will slow down the overall exhaust velocity due to the turbulence generated.

I would also recommend doing it like this. ^^^^^
Just pull the heat shield off of the stock cat and welt it to the straight pipe. It should be farily easy to do. :thumb:

haha! so awesome... I was JUST sitting here thinking hmmm I wonder if anyone has ever just taken the heat shield off their stock cat and wrapped it around your test pipe? It would pass visual inspection in a heartbeat if you made it look legit.

And as I was about to post a thread on it I came across this!

Do the cops really get on the ground to look?

Depends on the state and how strict they are. I've been asked to pop my hood in cali and my car isn't even registered within 2k miles of here. Just because they heard my BOV.

Cop: What type of turbo is that?
Me: Stock mitsubishi
Cop: No way that thing is huge its like a t3/t4 at least....
Me: Nope completely stock. I gotta go now. Anything else you need?
Cop: No, drive safe.

It was a 16g... Stock mitsubishi just not for a 2g.

LOL sounds like that cop has seen The Fast and the Furious a few too many times.

I've never had a cop kneel down and look under my car, and ive been running a test pipe for 4 years now. I did have a cop try to tell me that my car had to sound exactly like the day it rolled off the line though.:ohdamn:
I was like "good luck finding a 0 mile Talon to compare it to", and drove away.
