I did a search and found out that some people have done this. Welding a catshell on their test pipe. Question is, where can I find a catshell big enough to fit over a 3" pipe?

n/m I did more searching and found that prostreet online sells 3" cat shells for $50. :shhh:

That's a lot better than being slapped with a $1000 fine when an asshole cop decides he wants to dirty his uniform and look under the car.

Waste of money. Like Chris said, just hollow yours out.

Problem with that is, turbulence. And if I stick a straight pipe into the cat it would be pointless to have a 3" exhaust.

EDIT: Emissions i'm not worried about because I just did my smog check 2 months ago. I have approximately a year and 10 months until my next smog check. I just don't want a cop to look under my car and see that I'm running a straight pipe.

Hollow it out, and honestly...you can still pass emissions without your cat. I swear by it, the G2P Emissions passer from Checker Auto is the best stuff I have ever purchased. It has passed the corolla (with a bad CAT) 3 years in a row, and it has also passed the Talon with a bad o2 sensor.

you won't pass emissions though, will you?

Okay I'm lost. You think you're going to pass emissions because you have something that LOOKS like a catalytic converter mounted onto your test pipe? Have you ever heard of a sniffer?

Haha exactly. You are still going to have a 3" exhaust chief, i dont think you understand the meaning of the word hollow. It means the pipe goes through the HOLLOW cat. The cat is just a shell and the pipe is in tact and just goes through it, just like the one your about to get ripped off for $50.

You will fail w/o a cat.

:sarcasm:

I got one off of DSMTrader for $25. Personally I'd rather spend $50 on a fake cat than hollow out a $100 or more real cat, then you can put the cat back on for emissions tests. That's what I'd do but OC, NY doesn't have emissions tests:D .

Ok... let me get something straight. First off you hollow out the stock cat right? Measure how small it is in there, 2.25" at most, I stick a straight pipe in there and what'll happen? 3" downpipe.... 2.25" straight pipe, back up to a 3" catback?? And what happens when I need to do smog check? I won't have a real working cat to put back on.

I'm not sure whether the "You will fail w/o a cat" was direct towards me. But if you read my post more carefully, I stated that I just recently did a smog check, and I won't be needing another one for another 2 years. And when the time comes, I will swap my stock dp, stock cat, stock exhaust back on for the test.

Yea I might've got a tad bit ripped off at $50 for just the shell, but it'll be easy to install without hacking stuff up, and it's sure as hell a lot better than paying $1000 fine when a cop pulls me over.

Because the shell is all I need. I have a downpipe that runs all the way to the catback deleting the cat. Now it would be pointless for me to buy a 3" cat, and have to chop off a part of the exhaust to put it on. With the catshell I can just sandwich the straight part of the downpipe in between it and viola. Yea it does seem dumb to buy a catshell for $50, and there are cheaper alternatives, but to me this saves a lot of time.

RRE High Flow Resonator. Straight through, 3'' ID

$150. Makes sense if you want a pre-silencer which also has the benefit of passing a visual inspection. You could get a cheaper cat shell, but then there's turbulence and whatever else.

I don't think you understood what he said. He doesn't have a catylitic converter. His downpipe goes to a another pipe, not to a cat. Therefore he would need to buy a cat in order to gut it out. Now that I understand what he means, he's right that it would be cheaper for him to just buy this shell.

Ah good call, although would have been nice to know from the start ;)
