hi well i bought a 97 gsx a few months ago, it was auto and was swaped to manual it was left fwd because the guy told me he couldnt get the right parts,
he told me it had a 96 tranny on so i bought the t-case form a 96 manual also a manual rear dif with lsd and the rear axels. ( the guy only gave me a tcase i think its from the auto tranny).

well today me and some firend helped me to get it runing but the car goes for 1 meter and then stops, my first toughts is that we mixed the "suposed auto t case" with the manual ,
but i just want to double check before we swap the other in how do i check the year of the tranny and the t case.

i know that the 2ga and the 2gb trannys have diferent gear ratio and shoundt be mixed, now im scared we damaged something more expensive.

sorry for my bad grammar and bad punctuation english is not my native language.:)

What's the Viyn #?

Also correct me if I am wrong.

I watched a video on jacks transmissions and isn't 95-96 Trannys only for those years? and 97-99 are for those years?

has it been driven at all while it was FWD? If so wouldn't the center diff be shot?

I just had this problem similar to you, there are 4 types of transfer cases that I know of. I try to link *EDIT* I guess more if you consider JDM =\ *

uhmm i have the car for 6 months now and it has done about 1k miles fwd with out anny t case idk how much the previous guy drove it, but i dont think it was much it wasnt in a drivable condition when i got it ( blwon shoks and cut and bended springs).
-------------
uhmm thats interesting i already swaped the auto dif for a 2g manual with lsd, now the question is what t case would work with my set up :/?

You must really, really hate your center differential.

Don't drive the car until you buy another transfer case- make sure it's for a 97-99 5-speed or you'll still be replacing the center diff at some point.

manual,

EDIT: does your tcase look like mine? The auto's have that long part near the breather, if not then its a manual.

That transmission requires the 97-99 manual transmission transfer case.

If it, by chance, has a welded center differential, you may not have blown anything.

cool thanks, uhmm but its too late sadly i called the P.O. and he told me he
had the car like that for arround 8 months and he did arround 8k miles + my 1k = broken v.coupler :/ ,
if the car is on the ground it goes 2 feet and the the wheels wont spin anny more,

so what you guys think i should?

can i get rid of the coupler and welding my center dif ?

or is anny way to get a replacement for it?

what you should do? I think that depends on how much you like the car and budget. My eclipse is a weekend warrior, it sat for a while til I found a transplant transfer case. But in my situation playing the waiting game was worth it, got a transfer case for $220 shipped, some on ebay were $500 no lie.

I dont know about the diff but I have thought about it alot,

other reviews will help you chose though SOURCE * check 2nd post and read through those links.

From what Ive read cons of welded diff cars-
lose in handling, rear tire skipping, drop in gas milegage, "said" additional drivetrain stress, and low speed turning difficulty.

But none of those things exactly scare me away from doing it either.

For the benefits-
Improved launching, and overall straight line traction improvement,
and hopefully wont have to worry about blowing out stock center diff at 400+ hp with hardcore launching.

personally I think the eclipses stock turning radius sucks, I couldnt imagine it being worse.

so other option is 4 spider center diff upgrade

well i want this to be just a fun DD, ( for the moment :) ) im in college and i have a very tight budget.
haha i agree with you about the turnig radius being so bad haha i have to do 3 point turn where others make U turns, i coundt imagine living with the center diff welded and making all those noises all the time + eating all that rubber i think its gonna be more expensive in the long run.

so anny one knows wherei can get a cheap ( used in good condition or rebuilt ) center dif, i also need the VC unit?

4 spider dif would be nice but out of my budget :/

The VCU can easily be changed in the car by removing the trans end case, and the clip that holds it onto the center diff. I have a pile of good VCUs if you want one pm me. Also, the car can drive on a bad VCU, as long as the transfer case, and driveshaft to the rear end are connected. It will just be an open diff between the front and rear, with no front/back LSD.
