Does anybody know what engines can fit into a 98 eclipse RS bay? ive heard that there is less room and not very many engines fit but does anybody know what i can swap the POS 420a for?

You could always build the 420a..Or theres always the option of selling the n/t and getting a gst or gsx..

Do you have deep pockets?

Theres options out there but some require alot of fab work..Like making the car a 4g63..You could always evo 8 swap it..I've heard that is easier than swapping in a 90-99 motor..But would still be a PITA..

You can put the 2.4 from the Chrysler cloud cars in you have to search for what it takes to put it in.

It takes some work but you can put the 2.5 v6 from the avenger in. Or just use the avenger harness an put the 3.0 or 3.5 out of the newer eclipses

Well I personally have seen a regular 4g63T swapped into a few RS/GS. You can also swap the new evo 4g63T.

Pretty much any engine swap is going to require a lot of fabrication. These are not hondas or miatas/rx7s There not a whole lot of engine swap parts on the market. And none of the engines I know of will bolt to your stock motormounts or stock tranny.

The evo 4g63 is pretty close to lining up with the stock mounts. Though it will require some modification to fit the engine bay perfectly, though a bit less than it would to fit in a classic 4g63.

All that aside the 420a isn't a worthless engine. It can produce similar numbers to the 4g63 if your stay FWD. Any power past the capabilities of the 420a isn't going to be useful in a FWD.

Two normal sized people and two kids. Or one normal sized person and a big girl. The 420a isn't a bad motor. I know I miss mine.

I have been thinking about swapping my 420a out for a 4g63 but if I can build up another 420a and boost it then I would rather do that then go through all the problems of changing to another motor. So if I wanted to build a 420a for boosting what would ya'll suggest I bore it over to and what compression should I be running to boost at 16 to 20psi and is it worth it and what kind of hp gains would I be getting from the stock 146hp? Thanks in advance for the help.

You could push the 420a into the 300-350 whp range. Anything beyond that and it wouldn't really be usable.

I know of a 420a or 2 locally that run 300-350 at the wheels and are daily driven.

Edit:

If your going with forged pistons/rods 9.0:1 or a bit higher would be a good idea. Non-forged don't go higher than 8.5:1 compression ratio.

Boring is a repair process not a power increase process. Yeah it might get you a few extra horsepower. But, it is really just supposed to bring your piston walls back into spec.

the only reason i want to get rid of the 420a is because it is giving me constant problems at the moment i have an oil leak that is coming from the valve cover and i just replaced the valve cover gasket 2 days ago and its also idling horrible like its misfiring but it is getting a spark to all 4 plugs my downstream 02 sensor is completely shot could that be the problem? and could my valve cover be bent or causing it to leak?

i guess if everyone is suggesting to keep the 420 and build it then thats what i will do i just want it running right first before i start putting money into building it.

You should make sure the gasket is seated correctly on the valve cover.
The o2 sensor could make you run like booty.
If it's acting like it's misfiring, you should check plugs and wires and check the coil pack also.

I <3 my little GS man. And she's staying just the way she is. No boost for this baby. :p

It sounds like you have a few maint issues that new to be fixed, but you most likely would have the same issues out of a 4g63 that hadn't been taken care of.

exactly, the bad thing about these cars is that no one seems to take care of them.

when i bought mine it needed a battery, an alternator, coolant temp sensor, strut, tie rod end link, main cooling fan, a/c compressor, misc wiring fixed, O2 sensor, throw out bearing, and a few other small things that still need to be adressed as well.

regardless of all that, i still love my dsm, and once i get it back upto par on stock conditions, i'll be saving to build for boost :rocks:

*edit*
forgot to mention, i only knew two of those things on the list when i bought it, the others i've run across in the last couple months i've had it.

Depends on what condition your car is in. IF it has high miles, body is hurt, interior falling apart, then i would sell it and buy a turbo DSM.

If its actually fresh lookin, decent miles, and your mechanically incline, then get the 420a runing good and maybe sell it or put a turbo kit on it.

You could swap a 4G63t in it, but you have to have the patience and source all the needed parts.

Then your gonna have the problem with it being FWD. Some people like it or hate it. VC leaking, bad O2 and the little misfire shouldnt be your reason to replace the motor.

Just some advice :)

No way your going to hit 350 whp without boost. You could run a garrett T-3 turbo to about 8psi depending on its flow rate. That would be good on stock internals to 200-230 whp. Or you could go with a forged setup, arp headbolts, proper fuel mods, and get into that 300-350 zone. You could probably get more horsepower but the problem is putting that power on the ground. With the 420a your basically limited to a FWD setup.

i just figured it would be easier to swap a more powerful motor in than to build the 420a

First: without boosting it you will NEVER see 300 WHP
Second: You COULD do a 4G63t swap... IF you can find the engine and you have several thousand dollars for all the modifications you'll be doing to the engine bay.
Third: After replacing the stock internals on a 420A you'll pretty much eliminate the weak links.
Fourth: Here's a nice little setup for the 420A if you have the spare cash

Block
Wiseco Pistons + Rings recommend (8.8.1 .020)
Eagle Rods:
Clevite 77 Main bearings
Clevite Rod Bearings
High Volume Oil Pump
ARP Head studs
ARP Main studs
Gasket kit
Looking at about $1300 at that point just for parts

Head:
SBI PT Cruiser Style Lifter Set
SBI PT Cruiser Style Rocker Arm Set
SBI Valve Guide Set
Top End Gasket Kit
Crower Valve Spring & Retainer Kit
Cams
Adjustable Cams
About $1000

Misc
Bore cylinders
Hot tank
Decking
Balance rotating assembly
About $300

Turbo
Turbo Manifold
Oil feed and return lines
Wastegate
Intercooler
Blow Off Valve
Couplers and Clamps
Intercooler Piping
3" Down pipe
Turbo
Depends on the Brand of everything
could be $1200 could be $5000

Tranny:
Clutch TZ or OFE Series South Bend Clutch
LSD

Fuel and Tuning:
Hahn Portfueler
Harblo 255l Fuel pump
Wideband O2
Injectors (size depends on what you want)

Gauges:
Boost
Oil Pressure
AFR
Volt
Air/Fuel

so overall if you go with a somewhat cheap turbo you're looking at about $7k
That should put you above 300WHP
