I went to a shop for a water pump. Was recommended that it would be good to get a new timing belt. Got car back and it was great for 75 miles then while going down an off ramp the car died. Called my Mech. he got the car back to his shop looked at it and said the Timing tensioner pulley bolt snapped. He put in a new bolt in the pully to see if the valves were bent. he said they were and now it needs a valve job plus a Timing tensioner & pulley & of course the pully bolt . Was this just bad luck or what could have happened to have the pulley bolt break. This sucks. What would be reasons the pulley bolt would shear off. This is an experienced car builder. But he does'nt know what broke the bolt. Any Idea's or has this happened to any one?

Or an excuse of his fxxk up!

Basically it doesnt matter the shop should be responsible for fixing your car they worked on your car and it broke shortly afterwords, whats their take on it? Are they taking liability?

Don't let the shop bully you around. If you did what he recommend and then it broke. Its probably something he did. When I've had problems like this I've stayed as nice and polite as possible. But stayed on them to fixed it on there penny. Most of the time they will as long as you don't turn into an a$$ hole.

Yea, I agree with he should do it. He is going to do a timing belt and it's labor cost. To as he said help me out. I have to pay for the head and it's labor. Still feel , I'm gettin hosed. The bolt snapping off and screwing me pisses me off.

I say he replaced the belt only and not the rest of the parts. That is all part of the timing belt maintenance and his problem for the the broken belt. Each timing belt job should replace the belt, the 2 pulleys, auto tensioner and balanace shaft if you still have it. The bolt was most likely over tightened or worn out without too much without an inspection on it. Time for a free fixed up head. Don't forget that he'll need to get the valve guides checked to see if they are cracked or worn too much from the bent valve. New valves will need to be seated into the head.

If he refuses tell him you will contact BBB as the problem happened in conjuction to the work he performed.

I wouldn't trust him for anything other than what needs replaced as he may just half ass the work if it's coming out of his pockets.

If you didn't see the broken bolt personally, my guess is they just screwed up the timing belt installation, like many an inept mechanic has done to a DSM, and are just covering their butts. It take a LOT to snap a bolt. Chances are that they just didn't setup the tensioner properly, so the belt slipped. IMO, they should pay for the repairs 100%.

Don't pay for ANYTHING! It's his fault 100% You paid a pro to do it right. If it was 1000 miles I could see it not being his fault, but 75 comon.
Your belt should have snaped before ANY bolt, their designed that way.
He either used the wrong bolt, over tightened it, or is just a moron who shouldn't be working on DSM's. If he complains and refuses to fix it, tell him your gonna go to a higher authority and have a shop that knows how to work on these cars fix it and give him the bill. I would be leary of letting him touch my baby again anyway.
Can of gas is your last option ;)

if he was in the timing cover, it is his fault. if the car died while getting off the off ramp it might be ok. put a new t belt on,take out the spark plugs and crank it around by hand, see if you feel anything hitting, it's a 50-50, i have seen plenty of t belt's snap and the car is fine, i have also seen the altenative. that is what i do when they come in like this. good luck.

Honestly, don't touch anything until it's agreed that he will pay for everything and it's his fault. You don't want him to be even shadier and say you messed with it. Kind of like tampering with evidence.

After Reading all replys, It just confirms what I am going to do in the AM.
I want it fixed, they were in the timing belt. And should have known there could be an issue with old tensioner pulleys and related hardware, that would screw up the motor. I just wish I could stop being so Pissed off. It F#%ed up my head.

well sorry about the issue your having with the shop... but this is likely whats has happened to your head...

it will not be the cheapest repair.. but make sure they have it done right and that other issues will not arise....
bent valves means cracked guides also....

but if they are going to cover the shop bill, you may cosider upgrading the valves and springs now...

Friggin got my car & my money back. They wanted to fix it and charge me 1/2 of the total repair. I still feel like I got hosed. But, I didn't want to pay half of some imaginary figure, they would not give me a firm price they said the head did have an oil leak and would have need to be replaced. So they could tell me anything about parts and labor. They didn't charge for towing & labor and brought it to my house. They know they F$5#-up. At least I got my money back. Needless to say I'm done with those a$$ wipes.

I'm not totally sure we're getting 100% of the story here. I work at a shop full time and on every timing belt or water pump job we recommend the tensioners and pulleys get changed no matter what. This of course adds to the total cost and a lot of times the customers simply can't afford the added cost for parts. When this happens we are required to fill out paperwork detailing our recommendations and what parts the customer has denied to repair. This way we aren't held liable when something like this happens. If the shop you went to said nothing about changing the tensioners and pulleys when they did the job I wouldn't accept a refund and a free tow. They should be held responsible for the total cost of the repairs. If they deny you I would call the number posted earlier and call the better business burrow to have them investigate it. If however you denied the repair of the tensioners and any other parts during the repair its completely on you and you're lucky to have gotten your money back. In either case I hope you get it fixed but I wouldn't eat a head if someone else screwed it up.

Getting your $$$ back and a free tow is BS. Now it will cost you probably $500 atleast to fix their mistake. They didn't fix anything, now your car is worse than when you took it there. Are they going to pay for it to get towed to the next shop and fixed aswell?
I wish my GF bent over and took it up the a$$ as fast as you:thumb:
Don't let them do ya like that!

I work at a chrysler dealership and we do the same thing. If we recommend that a service be done we list all the recommended parts and labor charges. If the customer denies any of the listed repairs it is always documented for liability issues. Look through your paperwork. You did get paperwork right? haha! Check to see all the listed charges. If there is nothing on there about any tensioner, or pulleys, then all repairs due to the vehicles failure is on them. It wouldn't surprise me if he documented that you denied the add-ons just to cover his a$$. You already said that the mechanic assessed the damage himself so right off the bat you should know that it is entirely his fault. If he doesn't want to fix it at his cost then what I would do is report it! I wouldn't have him do the work though. See if there is any way you can get a quote on the parts and labor from a more trusted shop and have his company refund you that amount or cover the bill. There is no way he will go for it if you ask him, so you need to get someone like the BBB involved!

heres a rough est. on getting the head fixed.....

Valve job...................................... $160.00
CBN Mill...........................................$40.00
guides,Part.........................$2.85x8=$22.80
Guide, labor.......................$3.00x8=$24.00
Seals................................$1.50x16=$24.00
Valve, ...............................$12.00x8=$96.00

Total................................................$366.80 plus tax

plus any small parts or add'l like springs, spring shims

and you steel need gaskets, oil, filter, coolent ect
and Labor how many hours about 6 or 7 I would guess to R&R the head at about $100 per hour

The prices I quoted are for my area, they may be more or less in your area

so I hope you walked out with about $1200.00-$1400.00

also IF the valves hit the pistons hard enough, they may have pinched the ring lands, if that happened, then the pistons need to be replaced. so at a min the oil pan needs to be dropped and the rods and pistons pulled to have the rings inspected.

I am not trying to scare you, but these are the things your facing now.
Call the numbers others have given you, and raise a fuss and get your car fixed, as long as your in the right, and did not denigh the orgnial parts, when they set the waterpump and belt.
