I'm looking at a 97 eclipse gsx with a timing belt that jumped a couple teeth. it has dsmlink v3 full, an aem wideband, short shifter, fmic, i has cams but unknown brand, unknown BOV, GM Maf, custom intercooler piping, a tubular exhaust manifold, ksport coil overs and a couple other things I'm sure I'm forgetting. I'm wondering how much you guys(experts on dsms) think i should pay for it? I'm assuming it has valve damage but unknown on whether it has piston damage. just looking for a rough estimate. thanks!

Your looking at a valve job, timing belt job, head gasket/ head studs. What dose the rest of the car look like. Rust? Was maintenance done? Plus you have no way of knowing the condition of the trans since you cant drive it. How much is he asking? Any pics?

what are the chances that the pistons are bad? he said the timing belt jumped at idle and he turned it off immediately. is has strut tower rust on both sides but he said once i get it running i can bring it back to him during the summer and he will patch it for free. i have no clue on maintenance. he wants 2k which I'm hesitant even though i really want it. i do have some pictures but not very good ones of anything really i went and saw it in person though so just shoot me any question you have and hopefully i can answer it.

Not saying there couldn't be piston damage but I've never seen it happen and I do about 1 or 2 timing jobs every 2 weeks. The strut tower rust is a concern, unless you know the guy I wouldn't take his word about fixing it in the summer. Remember if there is rust where you can see, there may be more where you can not see. I wouldn't pay more then a grand and I dont even know if id pay that. The good news is it has link. That alone is worth 400 maybe 500 bucks alone.

yeah and he isn't even sure if the timing belt jumped for sure. I'm just trying to figure out what ill be up against if i buy it.

Ask anyone on here. They will tell you a non running dsm isn't worth a whole lot. Like I said it has mods going for it but whos to say when u get the top end re done the rings may be bad. Hell you could even have a rod knock. Not trying to beat you up I'm just trying to give you an idea on what could happen so you don't get burned.

thats what a mechanic said at my work. he was like even if you get the head rebuilt and the timing fixed, you don't know the condition of the transmission or the awd system, you don't know if the crank maybe walked its just all the unknowns that are scaring me. he said he went inside on for a couple minutes, went back outside to the car started it up and it was making bad sounds so he turned it off trailered it home and its been sitting in his drive way for about 6 months now.

If you get it for under a grand you can check it all out, decide if you want to fix it and if not im sure you could make your money back at least parting it out. If you do get it and it turns out to be timing, I would probably do a tear down and check the condition of the rest of the motor.

And please let us know if you get it and what the problem turns out to be. Im interested to find out.

so say i got it for 1200$ or so because he isn't in a rush to sell it he wants to keep it but he has other projects also, would i be better of just buying a different 7 bolt motor and just swap that in?

Its worth slightly less than what you can part the aftermarket stuff out for. Thats my personal philosophy.

Okay so probably around 1200$ then. And there strut tower rust is about two quarters side by side on each strut tower they are holes the body had no rust from what I could tell and the wheel wells also looked clean

Not worth it... With rust its worth nothing imo. (Considering it doesn't run either.)

No its not worth nearly 1200 with that bad of rusting already showing, tell him if he fixes the rust and takes pictures of the rust actually ending somewhere then I would say make an offer

Ok. I'm glad you guys talked some sense into me. Looks like my hunt for a 2g is still on.

Yeah but living in Minnesota and trying to find a rust free DSM for a reasonable price is going to be a hard one.
