What should I have done to my head while it's at the shop (it had 2 burned valves)

Yeah my head is at the machine shop. I don't want to spend on anything I don't need, but while it's out I want to get done what makes sense.

It has been rebuilt before, I don't know the miles or when exactly. It does not burn oil after idling, so the valve stems seals are good, though I will have them replaced just while it's there.

My questions are:

Do I need to have it decked? It was working fine before

Pressure washed? It's not filthy, so is this needed? What would the benefit be?

Otherwise I will just have the 2 valves replaced and the valve stem seals.

I'm just going for stock is all. But anything else important or not?

Have the machine shop check for true on the head seal surface. If it is flat I would not have it decked. Having the head tanked and cleaned removes varnish and carbon deposits allowing for more uniform air flow in and out of the head. The only thing I would consider is maybe some light porting on the intake and exhaust runners to go along with the seals and the valves being replaced. For stock the flow of the head will do what you need it to do just fine as is but porting and a polish will only make it do what it does but better.

how long ago was the head rebuilt?

If you just want to "patch and go" have them lap in the valves and slam it back on....I do not recomend that.

I would suggest having the head V-job, you do not just burn valves for no reason, the exhaust gasses pass through the valve and seat and torch part out of the valve. the seats could be out of round, also you may have other getting ready to fail.

Most shops are going to clean the head, no matter what, just so its not dripping oil over the equipment.

the head is alluminum it cant be magnafluxed. Thats only with cast iron blocks and the such, it can be dyed in order to expose leaks

Oh yeah. I was talking to a friend of mine who works at a machine shop. (Aerospace parts, so not typical machine shop for other automotive stuff) He mentioned something about dye they use to check for leaks.

So I should be good if I:

  1. Check for deck flatness on cylinder head an engine block
  2. Eyeball the valve seats for damage
  3. Check for leaks by use of a dye

??

pressure testing is more accurate way to check for leaks.

if your having a full valve job done.. I would have the valves back cut ....

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/341288-why-have-your-valves-back-cut.html

make sure they use the proper surfacice equipment and leave the proper surface finish for the head gasket you use...

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...face-4g63t-cylinder-head-mls-head-gasket.html

also have them mesure the thickness of the head... new spec is 5.200 min spec from AERA is 5.185 if you are at min thickness get a thicker head gasket.

you may also want to do this oil port mod....

hope this info helps
