So i traded my gtp for this 1g laser stick turbo with a new engine and transmission; only like 18k miles. I let my friend drive it and somehow he killed it. I thought it was the valve seals, turns out two of the pistons cracked. It's terrible :( So now I have it all down to the bare block. I know the rods are 1g, but the pistons only say STD on the top and that's it. Are these the 1g pistons or some other ones?

I ask because I know:

63D - 1G non-turbo
63T - 1G Turbo
63dT - 2G turbo

those are not 1g pistons, i have a set, and they look like this, according to your "what i know" my piston is a 2g piston, might have had a 1g rod 2g piston combo but not sure. all i know is this is what came out of it before i stuck in Mahle's and scats.

sounds like this 18k mile motor might not have had 18k miles on it, did you get proof when you bought the car that it was a fresh motor? or that it was rebuilt at all? you shouldent have anything to worry about especially at 18k miles with your pistons cracking if it was done right.

Those are OEM equivalent pistons often sold on Ebay, marketed as NPR. However, the picture in the auction doesn't match the actual pistons. I know because I bought a set just like those for a stock motor I'm rebuilding. I can see from the marks on that piston that there was some detonation going on there. You see the marks at the top that look like you stabbed the piston with a screw driver? Thats from knock. What's been done to the car? Looks like it was running lean.

Incorrect. You can kill a motor from detonation the same day it's started for the first time. Especially with cast pistons if you run lean and keep your foot in it.

like i said, if its done right. it shoudent have issues.... that includes tune. and why anyone would buy Ebay pistons for a rebuild is beyond me... just asking to spend more money in the future IMO:applause:

i believe you are correct when you say he was getting detination. looks like it indeed.

OP what turbo are you running and are you running stock fuel system?

Yeah I had proof of the mileage on it. He said he couldn't remember what pistons but it's some aftermarket ones with 9:1 compression. The kid was a complete idiot, he used jb weld on the oil pump cover right on the lip where the snub shaft pokes out; so they're both scratched up really really bad. It has ARP head studs and the studs were barely hand tight. The snub shaft doesn't even have the oil galley or whatever for the oil to get around it. Turbo was missing a bolt holding it on, tranny was missing two bolts holding it onto the engine and the ones that were there were hand tight. The tranny bracket holding it onto the frame wasn't even bolted to the transmission. Now I have everything stripped down and I'm spending money I don't have to fix it since it's my DD.I just had surgery on 4 torn spots in my rotary cuff so I haven't been able to work. It sucks really bad. :/ Just one big regret so far.

Thank you so much for the help guys.

Gotcha, my bad, I thought you were just referring to the engine build. I hear what you're saying about the ebay pistons, but there actually have been quite a few people that have had good luck with them. Mr Peepers comes to mind:

Anyway, sorry to clutter up your thread MNelson. What do the cylinder walls look like? You could get away with buying a new set of pistons w/rings, honing and putting it back together. That's if you're trying to get it running quickly and aren't planning on making monster power.

Hone and bone it. Pick up another set of NPR pistons or order a set from the partsdinosaur.com and deglaze the cylinders with a flex hone like this one: Amazon.com: Brush Research FLEX-HONE Cylinder Hone, GB Series, Silicon Carbide Abrasive, 3-1/2" (89 mm) Diameter, 240 Grit Size: Industrial & Scientific

Those are not npr pistons. Npr pistons have the same oem writing on them. They are a random aftermarket cast pistons, i've seen a few over the years.

Looks like a replacement brand to me. Maybe topline. Take a pic of the ringlands and we can tel you whether its a 1g or 2g style.

Incorrect Topline actually use OEM markings and are high quality pistons. They coat them with something I can't remember what but it is to prevent a few things like heat soaking & ect. Topline has a good rep so far with me and my brother. As he and his buddies has used their rebuild kits in thier chrysler turbos all with good outcomes. And I am currently running there rebuild kit (not the super delux, I chose a few of my own parts.) in my Gst and its been great so far. Ebay is just like everything you get what you pay for most of the time. Just have to be smart about what you by. I wouldn't buy anything that is an unknown or ridicoulousy cheap. Somethings just are not worth skimping on. And pistons are deff one of those things LOL.

i just bought brand new stock pistons and rings, shiny new :) thank you though.

And I'm running stock fuel system with an evo 3 16g on stock boost. i was gonna do the 2g pistons on 1g rods but i just don't have the money right now. :(

Thanks for such quick, and actually extremely useful posts guys.

You're not cluttering up my thread either red97rum, so don't worry about it.

I know, I believe you. The last two sets of "NPR" pistons I bought were the same pistons as the OP pictured. I bought them from the seller mizumoauto on ebay. Even though the pistons with identical casting as stockers were pictured in the auction, I received the same pistons as originally posted in this thread. That's why I said this in my first post:

mizumo auto - the shop that sold me the timing belt that broke after 4k miles. Hmm.

I think it's hilarious when you click on the link for mizumo and see their logo and slogan.

MIZUMO AUTO

LOL

That's weird, i've ordered 20+ sets of these over the years and they are always the same if they are npr pistons.

I thought it was weird myself, so I emailed them directly. So here we have it, straight from the horses mouth. Now it's up to you if you want to trust them or not, but I have personally had good luck and great service dealing with mizumo auto.

My email to them:

Their response, they got back to me in less than 30 minutes BTW. Even offer to let me send the ones I have in exchange for the units with 63DT cast into them:

I JUST got a set of NPR pistons and rings from them, and mine have the 63DT casting. No issues and installed nicely

wow that sounds like a load of bs. Why would NPR send some pistons with the 63dt on them and some w/o. That's bull. They run a line, they aren't going to change the design after making so many and not put that on the pistons, and then put it back on later, and so forth. I bet they send you the knock off ones because most people won't even think about the difference. And if you do and you ask them, you send the knock offs in and then they actually send you the NPR ones. They'd make so much more money that way. Might be, might not be. But I wouldn't be surprised.
