What might this cost (burning oil)?

Lately I've been smelling the scent of burnt oil, and from I'm reading around the forum it could be piston rings, valve stem seals, or a number of other things. Assuming the worst (short of a necessary rebuild), what might I be looking at in terms of cost?

First off you need to find the culprit before you can get an accurate quote. My advice is first off eliminate, if you already haven't, the possibility you are leaking oil onto something hot that would burn, like your valve cover gasket leaking onto your exahust manifold. After that your best bet is to get a leakdown test done, this can determine if you need new rings or anything else.

If you needed new valve stem seals, you're looking around $250-300. That includes you pulling the head off, and the maching shop milling it and installing new seals. You would be reusing your valves and other hardware. As for new rings you can re ring it, which will cost you at least the cost of the rings, rods bearings (not nessecary but a good idea), a hone and a head gasket. Or a rebuild, which varies too much for me to start listing.

hope I helped a little.

Thanks for the info...it was very helpful. I'm going to stop by a shop today to see what they have to say about it, and maybe get some additional info.
