What is causing this burning OIL!?

So when i bought this car it was burning oil and i saw that my valve cover seal was pooched and looked like it was leaking oil down the motor and into the exhaust manifold. I figured that may be the reason the car was burning so much oil but i took everything apart, got new gaskets, and put it all back together and it's still burning oil. It idle's barely anything noticeable of blue but when i rev it up blue pours out. The car runs and pull's hard. Everything runs absolutely normal minus the blue puff.

It's possible that it's still just blowing out the rest of the carbon and oil build up but i think it may be something bigger. I believe it may be the valve seals letting oil past or my piston rings are possibly fried. But i'm really thinking it's the valve seals and how would i really diagnose it?

If it does happen to be my valve seals i'm going to just buy a complete whole new head from FFWDConnection and try that out. Suggestions on if this is a good investment or where else to go would be great too.

Thanks In Advance

Have you checked your turbo for shaft play yet? Take the intake pipe off and try to wiggle the shaft up/down, left/right, in/out.

Yeah forgot to say that i checked the turbo and there is no shaft play. The turbo seams completley fine.

Remove exhaust manifold and check valves. If they black and and gooey, there's your problem. If they check out ok, rebolt everything and this time remove the O2 housing to check the turbine. If it's oily, there's your problem. Also, do a compression check. This is to verify if your piston rings are leaking or not.

Chech in an out shaft play that is the worst. Whats your compression like? Could be some blow by on the pistons. How much oil are you buring? My nissan is like a quart every two weeks an the valve seals are shot but i have been driving it for a year like that. If your only burning a lil then i would do some checks like the other guys said an not really sweat it.

NO Oil in the lower intercooler piping. My compression is 140 across the board. But i'm burning quite a drastic amount of OIL. I will try to get a video as soon as i can. I'm pretty sure it's my valve guides or piston rings so i'm taking the head off soon here and getting it cleaned, polished, and ported. Then i'm redoing the whole head. But i will go and record a video of everything this weekend

What's the mileage on your motor?

My valve seals are old and it lets oil into my combustion chamber. When I sit idle for a while, at a stop light for example, a big puff of blue smoke lets out of my tail pipe.

I just mix my oil with Lucas oil stabilizer and it goes away till 1500 miles later when the oil gets old.

I am not rich enough to afford a rebuild, if you're going to tell me to rebuild my head.

Haha, yeah i'm not rich either. It's my baby, If i have to i will rebuild my head. But it's got 180 xxx kms on it. But yeah, that's what happens to me. I sit at a light for like 2 mintues and then when i go "PUFFF" the blue just pours out. After a while of driving though it reduces the amount of oil puffin out. It's wierd. I'll try the Lucas oil stabalizer. Thanksfor the advice

I had this problem and changed out my valve seals and it went away, I used this tool and the entire job took me like 3 hours w/o removing the head!! This tool is sick!!
Euro Export, Inc.

yeah i was told about this LOL. I might invest in it. you can change the valve seals while doing this?

BTW, Wouldn't Lucas stabalizer oil be bad for turbos?

yea you pull the keepers, retainers then springs and the seals are right there they pop off with a screwdriver

GL Be patient and clog the oil drains loosing keepers in there is no fun

i would imagine. haha alright thanks for the tip :thumb: i'll be sure to do that. Oh yeah and 98gst14b, were the seals rather easy to change out. Like they are right under the springs are they not?

Losing valves in the combustion chamber is no fun either. Change them when cylinder is at top center compression.

another useful tip thanks. be sure to do that too.:thumb:
