i have a 6 bolt in my 2g, and apparently the only possable way to set the timing is with the use of a Data logger..

i have been told there is not possable way to properly set the base timing one a 2g using a 1g cas.. without using a logger.. I find that VERY hard to believe but nobody has told me anything else.

but i notice there are 2 different kinds of loggers.. OBD2 and NON..

I need the OBD2 right? since its a 2g ECU?

also whats the cheapest PDA i can use with this setup?

.. im not in the market for a really nice one, since all im gonna use it for is setting the timing this one time and then probably will sell it.

Dude you worry me a bit. Did someone else do the install of the 6 bolt into your car?

There are two different kinds of loggers, OBDI for cars between 90-94, and OBDII for 95+ cars. The logger talks with the ecu, so what motor you have really doesn't matter. Since you have a 2g ecu, you would need the OBDII logger. You can run the logging software on any palm running the 3.0 Palm OS. You can pick up a cheap Palm III off ebay, or there are other recommendations if you search the archinves.

As far as setting your timing, NEITHER logger can do that. All loggers do is read values from the ecu, and clear check engine lights. It can tell you what timing you are currently running, but as far as setting it, I don't know how to do that on a 2g or a 1g car. Again, other posts in the archives talk about setting 1g 6bolt timing. It sounds like different people are telling you different stories. Again, I suggest instead of just listening to some people, do the research yourself and see if you can't find out the answer.

Why not keep the logger once you buy it? It's a very valuable tool. You don't think you'll ever need to tune your car?

I was told i need it to get the proper timing, because supposidly you cannot ground a 2g ecu while you set the timing like you can a 1G, so what i have been told is that i cannot go by what the timing light says and adjust the CAS to 5BTDC.. because if the ECU isnt "grounded" it will constantly be making adjustments.. making it impossable to set the base timing..
THAT IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD.. not what i know/think,

I use a FJO Wideband to do my tuning.

A wide band is great for WOT, but for tuning low safc setting or maft, you will want to use the ecu's fuel trims, which can only be seen by the logger. The wideband is useless for tuning fuel trims. I still sugguest keeping the logger. Then you can also clear CEL.

Also, tuning with a wideband is good, BUT you also really need a logger too. If you just tune for a certain a/f ratio, say 11.5:1, that's great, but you don't know what is happening to your timing or if you are getting knock. It's still good to have the logger on there just to make sure timing is still advancing at whatever a/f ratio you are aiming for.
