What kind of aluminum is 1G 5-spd trans bellhousing made from?

Hi guys,

Feel like a noob, I did some searching but didn't find anything that would help.

I have a 1990 5 SPD FWD Laser Turbo.

I bought it knowing it had a crack in the bell housing.

Finally got the trans off, and a local community college teacher is offering to TIG it for me, but he asked me what type of aluminum it is???

I don't really know what to answer besides Cast haha.

I know aluminum has different numbers with it???

Can anyone chime in???

I don't know but I had mine welded here in town by a tig welder, it held up on my fwd, and had my awd transmission break it was welded as well.

He should see that it is cast and know what to do if he is experienced in welding. Sounds like the guy shouldn't be teaching others to weld if he can't figure out how to weld a piece of cast.

He hasn't even looked at the trans yet , I just said I need a trans Tig welded. Over Email...

I tried looking it up in the technical manuals but they don't mention the designations. If I had to take an educated guess, it may be 2010.
