What Is A Good Brand Tachometer?

My boy was cleaning out his attich and found a bunch of misc. car parts. There was a Autometer tachometer and some sunco gauges. I know those Sunco gauges are the cheap ones that Autozone and Pepboys sell. So I'm not really interested in those, but I HEARD autometer was a good gauge brand. But what about Autometer Tachs? Is it worth installing (even though i got it for free)? It's Autometer Tachometers aren't high quailty what brand is?

I'm not asking what people would think of me putting a tach in my DsM. I don't care if anyone thinks it's "ricey". It's mainly for when I'm driving in the city with the music up.

I can see my stock tach but I had a very bad accident. And I'm very nervous driving in the city with high traffic from, people, cars, and bikers. I just wanna be as focused on the road and my surroundings as much as possible.

Lmao ok well is there a way to just wire up a Shift light? And program it to stop a a certain RMP ?

You don't need a second tach. Also, I drive with my music blairing and you don't need to hear the engine to know when to shift. Lastly in stop-and-go traffic you shouldn't be riding someones ass to the point of looking down will cause you to get into an accident.

Point being, as Paul said, it'll be more of a distraction with that giant gauge in your view of the road and always paying attention to it will cause more of an issue.


Just use the lowest gear you can without having the motor work too hard (bucking, stumbling, chugging etc.)

Ok.. But what about the shift light? I'm not the only one that drives this car. I also let me GF use it for work and things like that. I just wanna have that peace of mine with her being behind the wheel as well. Is there a shift light that can be set to a certain RPM?

I never needed any tach or light. But after being rearended so har your thrown across a 4 lane express way, and can't remember what happened you tend to be nervous while driving. I had this car for about a year or so and never thought about a tach. Plus like I stated before I just wanted to know if a Autometer tach was Good. Also I share this car with my GF and tht will give me peace of mind that she's shifting properly.

How does being rear ended make you need a second tach? So glancing down for a split second to see the position of the needle doesn't work for you or your GF? If not then you should have an auto...

I think I speak for many, many people when I say that I can determine my engine's RPM by feel or by sound. I could completely block the factory tach on the cluster from my view and crank my stereo up, and still be able to determine when to shift, or approximately what RPM I'm at, just by how the car feels, by how it responds to a given throttle, or by my MPH. If you know how to drive your car, you don't need to stare at a tach to properly drive around town. So, the thought of needing a second tach for driveability purposes is just plain ridiculous.

i believe with time you will get over the scariness from this accident. in the meantime IMO you shouldn't worry about exact rpm shifting, and if your girl can't drive stick that well, a shift light just might distract her. i would just stay away from things that distract your eyes or mind from the road or an accident is likely to happen.

I do not see how having an aftermarket tach can help you avoid an accident in any way. As others have said it is more of a distraction and can obstruct your view. Also if you've been driving a manual transmission for more then a week you will be able to tell when to shift without having to look at the tach or a shift light. Paul said everything else I would like to say in the above post and if I keep typing I'll just be repeating... kind of like having 2 tachs, .
