ok so i'm doing a battery relocation, fuse box relocation, and a mild wire tuck. my question is, i have noticed that the wires going into the fuse box are different gauges, some big some small. do i have to match the gauge size to each wire i have to extend, or can i just use some wire that is bigger then all of them to add extensions? i really dont wanna have to buy all kinds of differnt size wire. i know i cant add extensions that are smaller then the factory wires, but will it hurt if i use bigger wire?.. thanks.

Smaller wires go to low load side of relays (switch side) larger wires are
for load side of relay (devices like lights, windows, headlights, etc..).

Most electricians would error on side of caution and say get two sizes of wire.
Matching the smaller wire with same gauge and larger wire to match larger gauge.

I use two different colors at minimum to be able to tell difference between ground and hot. So now you are looking at 4 spools at least.

You are technically correct though, putting larger wire to smaller will
not overload smaller wire. Never use smaller wire connected to larger wire,
that will surely start a fire.
But professional electricians (licensed) would most likely never ever do it.
You have to think of the next owner on these projects.
I document everything with pictures and notes so that the next owner does
not get any surprises.
Putting only larger wire in your relocation might make someone think
the circuit could handle a larger load, those smaller wires will not and that
could cause trouble. Although once relocated it is unlikely anyone
will ever be in there again.

I recently had to completely replace my fusebox after it shattered in an accident. Quite an experience.

Let us know how it goes and include some pics.

These two links are long discussions about relocations, some with pics.
Might give you some ideas.

What he said ^^ plus I would go one size bigger if anything on the wires you have to extend. Resistance goes up the longer the wire and with higher resistance, the amps go down.
