So you want a quiet exhaust that flows well....well this is a world of compromise and without a lot of money spent, that does not exist IMO. So what do you do? You want the flow of a open down pipe, but you can't stand that drone, and frankly the police don't much care for it either, as your wallet and driving record may reflect.

I'll tell you what you do. You look under your car, and glance at your CAT. And wave good bye to that fella.

Now before I go further I should say, I had a SS manderal bent 3" exhaust, with 2 resonators and a fart can. It actually sounded ok, bit loud at times but was very deep and sounded good for the most part. For reasons I wont get into I was unhappy with it however and wanted it to sound quieter, but i'll be damned if I am restricting my exhaust flow to make it quieter.

So then what do you do, first you get yourself a OEM exhaust system (from the DP back) See above ^. Then you contact "secondnature" on this forum and supply him with a GOOD MS drawing of what your looking for. And what do you end up with.... well something like this.

Here we have a 2 bolt slotted 3" flange, going to 3" pipe to a 3" V band of course to another 3" v band, to 3" pipe with the cutout which is 3" pipe with a 3 bolt flange. The end of this pipe has a 3" v band clamp mated to yep duh another 3" v band clamp, and to bolt to the stock exhaust it is reduced via hand made cone to 2.5" slotted 2 bolt flange.

He just finished it up for me and sent me this pic of the finished product, so soon (end of the month) he will be shipping it off to me, I will take pictures of it mounted and maybe a crappy video. Without mounting it I can't swear by it yet but unless something crazy happens I think i'm in love LOL. So then it's just pick out the electronic cutout your happy with, mount and wire it up, press button for open 3" exhaust :hellyeah: Press button again for quiet. :)

P.S. Encase your wondering why the V band clamps? Easy, so it can be clocked however I want it.

I would like to add due to the Cat delete, this is for OFF ROAD USE only. :shhh:

Personally I would put it Just ahead of the cat. So, how do you plan on making the switch?

If you dont have a sniffer test in inspection who is gonna care. I like it. But why not just move the CAT down and mount it front of the CAT.

How about an electronic cut out with sensor, that engages off of vac/boost.
Once you hit your set boost pressure, it opens up to that full blowing 3" cut out.
I would buy it!!

Because every electronic cutout I know of also uses a gear reduction box and takes about 3 sec to open and close. So frankly it's just not fast enough.

Well you kind of pointed it out, I have never lived anywhere that does emissions tests and honestly I don't plan on it any time soon either (at least with this car) so it's not a problem. And as to why I didn't mount it in front of the CAT. Because I didn't want it in the down pipe and I didn't want to mod the stock exhaust for something that I could care less about anyway.

......duh, also cali sucks in regards to moding cars.

i like it my buddy did the same on his 1g. he ran a 3" dp to a cut out in place of the cat then stock exhaust. nice and quiet driving around then he opened the cut out had all the noise you could ever want

Exactly I am going for a split personality with this thing. Quiet one moment, unimpeded the next. With this cutout and my new O2 housing w/MVS WG that dumps to atmosphere. This thing is going to be a real sleeper. I even sprayed the stock exhaust with VHT black header paint LOL. OEM tips are all you notice.

What are you gonna do with the cat? I need one. If your gonna chunk it. Why not chunk it to Tennessee. Ill pay shipping.

I would but theres one small issue, the guy I got the exhaust from I assume gutted the CAT, because it was hollow on the inside. So unless you just want it to make it LOOK like you have a CAT then it's useless.

I got one of those. Thanks anyways. Are you going to post some pics when you get you cut-out mounted.

another argument against the electronic cut outs is they tend to rattle a after a year or two.

However you can find vacuum actuated cut outs which basically use a waistgate solenoid & arm to open and close the cut out plate. they will open up after 5 or 10 psi of boost and remain closed under normal cruise. I hear they close very tightly and and are much quicker to open and close than the electronic ones.

that would obviously be better suited to cutouts on the DP though, just from the stand point of vacume sorcing.

I have one on my car, where OP got the idea from and it has been leak free for the last year or 2.

Cutout is great and having the ability to open whenever I want to is also great.
