Hi y’all! First time poster. I have a 97’ GST making a WAP WAP sound under the intake manifold when only in drive. Sometimes goes away with RPM. No power is lost just sounds pretty bad. Any idea what it could be?

It happens when I’m parked in drive also, I’m leaning towards something transmission wise.
Does it increase with engine speed?
It does seem like it will be trans related by your description, just cant think of anything that would produce a "wap wap wap" sound.

You're missing a tq converter bolt, im thinking you have others that are loose and hitting stuff. Either that or the flexplate is broken/cracked. Gonna need a bore scope to see, remove the transmission is pretty much a necessity to be sure.

Your trans also seems to be flexing away from the block when you put it in drive (as well as the engine moving ALOT) which makes me think you've got loose or missing Bell housing bolts.

Check the Bell housing bolts, replace any that are missing, tighten any loose ones. Do the same to the torque converter/flexplate bolts, and you may want to look into replacing uour motor mounts with at least new oem style, if not prothane inserts.

Make sure to red Loctite all the converter bolts and check all of your motor mounts. Replace them as necessary. 3 of the mounts are attached to the transmission. I ended up going all solid mounts on my 97 AWD. It was clunking pretty bad after I purchased the car. Here is a picture of my trans mounts

For sure, we’ll change the motor mounts, good thing she isn’t a daily LOL

Yea, got the flex plate bolt coming in tomorrow. $17 for one bolt with shipping!

Might have been more cost effective to buy a whole set.

Also, I edited my last post directly after you replied, but check all the bell housing bolts.

The mounts will be a nice addition, tho they add some vibes to the car.
