I have a leak under my intake manifold. My instructor told me it may be a bolt near the balance shaft. Can you confirm if this is a common issue?

is your valve cover leaking? i'm gonna guess and say yes. Those valve covers suck to seal. The thing is made of 2 pieces of thin sheet metal formed in a press instead of cast like on the other engines.
If it was my car i would just pull the valve cover and the intake manifold. Clean the inside of the manifold, re install it with a new gasket, put a new valve cover gasket on and change the PCV valve.

No it is not common. Possible yes but not probable. Somebody would've had to leave it loose.

I saw a little oil on my intake manifold (4g63) so while I was getting my flywheel resurfaced, I had him check the intake manifold. First pic is .001” removed, then another .001” and a final pass to get it flush.
