Ok. I found the attached photo on someone elses post. No one answered his question other then yea, that fine if you have no balance shafts.

I DO have balance shafts.

Ok.. I broke down in SC on my way to FL from NJ..

I needed a new waterpump and I had a guy do it.
The test drive didn't go well. I said the balance shaft had to be wrong. The motor didn't sound right at all.

So now I have driven the car about 500miles like the picture above. I know they set the timing off on the sproket a bit cause they marked it wit red paint. The shop guy also did the check of putting the screw driver in the back of the motor. But I belive he got the motor running good and not timing right on the balance shaft rear.

SOOO NOW... my issues is when it comes to tuning. I can get the tune nice, except my timing its not smooth at all. And I have a problem getting the car past 4500k no matter how much I change the fuel. Its either a 02 of .94 or more around that time, but I get my nice .89 before 4000k
Could this be my problem.??? I dont think I can fix the oil/bs timing myself I'm not to sure of myself getting all that done with or without a lift.

also... from that picture, which way would I turn the b/s to get it correct..

Can someone also please post the correct way to set the timing of this gear so I can get it done correctly... Also should I try it myself?

it only lines up every six rotations of the crank or somthing like that...

If your doing the water pump you have to take off the belt essentially, turn it up to six times to try to get it lined up and settle on the one closest. Pull out the inspection bolt and stick a screwdriver into the hole LIGHTLY and turn the oil pump shaft till the screwdriver goes in. Line up the crank (should be VERY CLOSE maybe a tooth off, if not, stop there and be careful about turning the crank) and make sure your cams are lined up. Voila done.

Note also that in this Photo there is NO Front BS Belt on the Crank so he may have done the BSE - Dude you might as well plan on redoing ALL your Belts & doing a FULL re-timing & tensioning job & IF you LIKE that 6 Bolt in your NICE 98 GSX please bite the bullet & DO THE BSE.

The oil pump sproket runs at 2/3's crankshaft speed, therefore all of the timing marks (cam sprokets, crank sproket, and the oil pump sproket) will all only align with their respective marks every six revolutions of the the crankshaft.

After fifty plus timing belt jobs I have yet to be unable to get all of the marks to align. If they do not all align every six revs, then something was done incorrectly.

If your ignition timing is off then you might want to suspect that the intake cam is off also.
