A while back, there was a thread about machining the weights of the BS that runs the oil pump. I cannot find it anywhere. Does anyone remember what I am talking about or some of the words in the post so I can dig it up?

do you think it is really needed...i am asking because my 3000 miles oem pump just went...it had the stub shaft on it...and i was just thinking that maybe because the balance shaft got replaced by a stub shaft...that maybe there is not enough support like how it is from the factory...i am reving to 9k so maybe that plays a factor in it...but i do not see to many other people complain about it...or maybe others have had there oil pump fail and can not find a valid reason for it...

The logic behind machining the BS to fit into the 2nd bearing race makes enough sense to make me think its necessary on any BS removal, especially if you are revving to 9 grand. I am building a full race motor, so in my case I think it is DEFINANTLY necessary.

Think about other cars that dont have a balance shaft attached to thier oil pump though, most V-8s fit this catagory. They seem to do just fine, plus the fact that the stub shaft comes from the mirage engine that does just fine without the balance shaft and just uses the stub shaft in its oil pump. Use your own judgement though, I guess we should research it some more, its something I have thought about alot too. Good luck

I rev to 8500 and I have no problems with the stubby shaft.

i rev to 9000 or so...and my oil pump just went...

we think it might be a possibility that it may be because of the stub shaft...

about 3 months ago the number 1 bearing spun on me and seized my motor...we got another crank and i sent my rods back to pauter and they cleaned and fixed them...we put them in with calico coated acl bearings...250 hard miles later i noticed oil leaking from behind the timing belt cover...it ended up being the oil pump that was only 3 months old...it was hard to spin but it was not seized...since we had the pan off to replace the front case and oil pump i decided to check the bearings while i was at it...now this is where the real story begins...

number one bearing was really beat up...almost to the point where it was about to spin...the babbitt looked pretty beat up...this is not a picture of my bearings but it looks just as bad if not worse:

&highlight=king

number two bearing looked ok except for a little stripe down the middle...

number three and four were perfect...

my mains were perfect also...they were king bearings...

i ruled out oil starvation because number four would be more beat up if that was the case...

maybe metal in the oil since the oil pump did get a little funny and ate some metal away...but if that was the case then the mains would be messed up also...

maybe knock...but if i knocked that bad...all the bearings would be bad...but in this case number one was really bad...number three and four are perfect...

maybe too hi or too low oil pressure...i did get the oil pressure relief thing ported a little bigger...did i port to much maybe...if it was an oil pressure thing do you think it would only mess up two bearings...

any advice is very appreciated...thanks...

I know of a couple people that rev higher than that and have no problems with the stubby shaft. I'll see if I can get them to take a look at this thread and post their experiences.

Take it from my own personal experiance machine the BS down. Some folks that I know of, who run the stub shaft, change there oil pumps each year.

any response to the post above me...as of right now i will be putting mine in with the stub because i do not know where my balance shafts are...and i do not know how much it will cost me to get it machined...
