What are these two fittings for? They're both threaded, but nothing there?

(sorry for crappy pic, ill try to get better)

The were once vacuum lines that connected to those fittings when this engine was in a 1G.

The vacuum lines, and most likely your EGR valve, are eliminated.

I'd have to disagree. If my eyes aren't going crazy, thats a picture of a 1g thermostat housing. If so, there is no vacuum going on there. Through the various 1G thermo housings I've seen, some of them are 3/8" or 1/8" ports that are simply not used from the factory. Other things that are present on the thermo housing are the coolant temperature sensor (both a smaller 1/8" single blade and a larger 2 pin harness 3/8"), and misc water feed line nipples.

This sounds more reasonable. Thanks! and btw I loved your thread on project "rely-on-ability"

Correct

The top one is for the a/c coolant temp switch. That turns off the a/c if the engine temperature reaches 239*F. That is not needed for the car to run perfectly fine. I don't have mine.

The bottom one in the picture is for the coolant temp sensor that sends a signal to the ecu. This is needed or the car most likely won't even start. There is another one to the right of this one that should have one wire going to it. That is for the gauge.

Hmm. Well my car drove for 13 hours without ANY problems. Then just all of a sudden it started running like #### so now I'm eliminating things one by one. It threw some codes and my CEL has been on ever since. I'm going to have to write down everything it was....

EDIT: And my thermostat in the car works.

Nevermind. I wasn't looking close enough. The bottom one that is circled is for the emmisions thermo vacuum valve. It is part of the egr system on 1g's. It would have two vacuum lines going to it.

Even Wisemen can be mistaken....especially those with 2G's :sneaky:.

Here's the part that is missing from the lower hole:

It's a Thermo Valve, part of the EGR's Vacuum Control system. It contains a wax pellet that allows vacuum to pass through the fitting when cold....once the coolant heats up, pellet melts and blocks the hole making the EGR operable. It basically works like a FIAV.

I eliminated my Thermo Valve altogether on my 1G, replacing it with a 3/8" pipe plug in case any inspection mechanics would get snoopy and wonder why I had open vacuum fittings under my hood. It appears the previous owner has simply cut the vacuum portion off of your fitting, essentially making it a plug.

If you don't have an EGR, there's no need for the Thermo Valve.

See that's another thing, I've been on the search for the past day for my EGR. I think the previous owner removed it. I cant seem to find any signs of it. So that might explain why there is not one on mine...

hah! I should keep my mouth shut about 1G OEM stuff, eh? :p

ROFL! I only know what they look like because I've removed them from just about every 1G I've ever worked on.

Hey I can't pass up an opportunity to pick on a Wiseman!
