so i need to do a senior sem project and i either want to rebuild my motor or swap another used motor in, what cost would i be looking at by rebuilding, obviously not back to stock, what would you do if you were in this situation, what do i need to rebuild my motor and how much would it cost and i mean something to put down some hp. or going the cheaper path just buying a used motor and swapping it in what am i looking at doing this, how long will it take etc? just what am i getting myself into? but mainly i wanted to know what other people would do if they were to rebuild? thanks everyone.

well if you are low on money, you could just grab a used motor, with a good compressionand drive till it dies.then you should do

.20 bore
Wiseco pistons
Eagle rods
Eagle crank or just knife edge your old crank
ACL bearings
Cometic headgasket
new seals
new t-belt components
new water pump
new oil pump
BSEK

These things cost some money, but you won't go wrong with this setup, and at the end youll be happy ;)

A good short sem project would be to swap out an engine. You really need to know someone that is good at rebuilding engines if you want to do it for the first time in a semester.

yeah ive checked them somewhat havent found anything though. my dad really doesnt want me to swap it for a used engine cause doesnt think it will be reliable and it will just break down

I am in the same boat. I have a 4g63 though. (Not sure if the op is referering to his username)

I have a budget of $1k. I am lucky and have friends with knowledge of this stuff. I am thinking about getting the fast track vendor sale, which is a built bottom end for $800, or rebuilding oem parts. I haven't priced out the oem parts yet, thats on my todo list for first thing in the morning. It probably will come close to the built bottom end sale, so might was well...

And a used turbo motor can run pretty high in price....
Any opinions?

My motor problem (suspected, havent torn down yet):
Main bearings; rod knock
