I have attempted to find this info without really getting a confident answer. However, I can only assume it is due to a supersession, but my part catalog does not show this.

In the photos you will see two 5th gear assemblies next to each other. The one of the left came out of a 1993 GSX AWD and the one on the right is unknown...
I noticed that the 93 GSX 5th gear brake synchro has 24T and the one on the right has 36T. Actually all the synchros on the 93 trans are 24T. Does anyone know what's going on here? also If looking at the back side of the 5th gear the 93 5th has 64 stamped on it and the one on the right has 62 stamped, what this? both tooth count on the gears are the same 33T

Do the early trans have full 36T rings and the later 1G models have 24T, why would the factory do this? I also noticed the 93-94 AWD trans only have one case oil guide. That's weird as well, I wonder what the idea behind getting rid of the one was?

#40 in the screen shot is the 5th reverse brake,

One of these is from a 90 the other two 91-94. I'm assuming the oddball one is a 90. I think I lost the synchro for the 90 5th though as the 3rd sync ring I have laying around doesn't fit the odd ball gear and I believe 90 5th synchro rings have 30 teeth instead of 36.

Edit: just counted the oddball gear and it has 30 teeth so it is indeed a 90(89-92 I believe) 5th. The other two are 92.5-94. Don't know the exact years. I know one of the transmissions I was robbing parts from was indeed a 92.5+ so maybe that is where the gear marked 62 fits.

I'll add to this just for the sake of information, but I rebuilt my 93+ AWD trans and found similar situations. The synchros that came out were the smaller teeth count than the replacements I ordered from Jacks.

I believe these are 1st gear, and 2nd gear double synchros. I don't distinctly remember a difference between 3rd and 4th unfortunately

i heard less teeth may result in quicker shifting or smoother shifting due to less teeth to mesh...however, I just read this somewhere...
