Hey all,
I have been working on my transmission over the last month or two taking my time on my first tranny rebuild ever. It`s been a very educating experience and rewarding as well.
The reason my transmission needed to be rebuilt is that it wasn't going into first gear (not a linkage problem), so I decided I would follow the DRE guide and do my best, although the DRE guide doesn't cover everything that goes into the work. So when I got the case apart, as soon as I pulled out my intermediate gear stack the input the bearing for bottom of the intermediate shaft fell apart. Major pitting in bearing race and under side of the bearing as well, this caused 1st gear on Int shaft to score the hell out of the bottom of the transmission case.
Knowing that there was aluminum shavings going to be everywhere in the transmission I decided to take everything out/apart and clean, clean, clean. I have also been taking out hard cast edges inside the case and done some light sanding so I have smooth surfaces which in return will make for better gear oil circulation (prob doesn't make a difference but I'm waiting for parts)
Now I was having some difficulty getting some of the bearing races out such as the bottom of the intermediate shaft. Heres a pic of what I did to do so. 3" 2 jaw gear puller, fabricated so the arms will fit into the slots on the bottom of the case where the race mounts up to. The rest of the races that wouldn't pull out by hand came out very easy with just the arms from the 3" gear puller.
The only race I haven't figured out yet is the bottom of the input shaft (by bottom I mean closest to clutch). The little puller wont fit in there. I believe I remember reading somewhere about taking the seal out and using a flathead screwdriver going in from the bellhousing and taping it out, although I don't see how that would work because there is a aluminum edge around it enclosing the race.
I have also tried to look up info on the screen that's inside the tranny close to the diff, I have to get that off because of the metal shavings and it seems to be factory riveted into place. Is it ok to drill these out and to just use any rivet that will fit in the new screen I receive with my parts order?
The shifter assembly is also giving me a hard time. There's only the one pin that seems to be seized in there. Only thing I haven't tried yet is heat, I'm thinking an open flame that close to the cast aluminum is not a good idea
