so yesterday i put a new timing belt on. along with new water pump pulleys and tensioner. i get it running and it almost sounds like the timing cover is rubbing a pulley once i hit like 2200 rpm. "kinda like a plastic rattlings sound".. so i tore it all down took the cover off and started it without alt belt and power steering belt.. still doing it!!i know for 100% the belt is on perfect and is timed perfect. but it won't rev over 6k feels like its loosing power. but holds full boost.i believe i did something wrong. idles and rides perfect. just won't rev hi and power falls off about 4k. can i get some suggestions.

sure, stop driving it until you find out what you did wrong.
Do you still have balance shafts? It's very easy to get them out of phase even if the mark on the sprocket lines up. People have been doing it wrong for over 20 years.
It's also very easy to put the exhaust gear one tooth off. Double check all timing marks. Also check the tension, the teeth on the belt should stay flat on the sprockets, not raised up off the sprocket.

yes i do have balance shafts. and you could be right. because i didn't move them therefore they could be wrong i suppose. are there marks on them i need to check or how to get them lined up? and if it is them would they cause the loss of power and not being able to rev past 6k? and i didn't do just the timing belt. i put a whole new head, arp studs, water pump, pulleys and tensioner.

My money says check the rear balance shaft. Do not assume everything is correct just because the marks line up. The rear shaft marks line up even if it ins't in time. You must check the phase of the shaft. vfaq.com has all the instructions. Factory manual does also.

I agree that the timing could be off still. Whenever you had the car running with the timing belt cover off, did the belt look like it was spinning smoothly or was the belt vibrating? If the belt itself is vibrating then you didn't line up your marks correctly. Here is a link to help you out. It's off of an EVO forum but the same concept applies: Vibration after timing belt/balancer belt install - evolutionm.net

The timing jumped off 2 teeth. I didn have the tensioner pulley spun properly so it felt tight when i put it on but skipped a couple teeth after running. So glad i caught it. But im still getting the vibration and i cannot figure it out. Deffinately something i did wrong.

Your balance shafts are out of phase. Also with the timing belt tensioner, if you can't re-install the pin after removing it and letting the car set than the tension isn't correct.

We've given you some good links that show you how to do it right. It's up to you to either do the job right, or realize that you can't do it right and take it to someone who can.

i never touched the balance shafts. or the balance shaft belt. how would they be out of phase?

The rear shaft is driven by the oil pump gear which you did touch if you did a timing belt job. You don't just line up the marks and call it good. It only lines up every 2 turns.

yea but if i set it all in time before i took the belt off.. and didn't move any of the bottom pulleys.. i didn't bump it a whole turn!. i dunno i guess i could be wrong.. i really did take my time but who know's i'll check that.. i might buy a new block anyway i'm thinkin.. after putting this fresh head on i'm blowin alot of smoke.. oil rings my guess ### i got perfect compression in the top end now

Well if your set on a new block, might not be a bad idea if your looking in that direction, and get those bs out there.

yea.. i figured either buy a jdm motor or just get like a frankenstein block. either way i'd have the same kinda money wrapped up into it since i have a brand new head
