For those that have correctly prep’d engine block and painted it using vht, how does it hold up long term?

Please post pic if possible and if you have any other paint you’ve used, lmk.

    Thanks
    Tony

I have used the VHT product for years with great success . I don`t have any pictures to show but with a properly prepared block VHT High Heat paint holds well and last .

Same here. My orange Small Block Chevys are still orange. My black 4g motors are still black. My Chrysler 360 in my old RV was looking great when I sold it.
I'd go with VHT any day, just make sure the block is void of any oil etc.....

Nope, BUT....our water tubes don't seem to hold paint real good. I don't know if it is the type of material or maybe I didn't get it wiped down really good, IDK. On my last 4g, I didn't paint that water tube, I left it metal.

I’ve had good luck with vht on heads and stuff. No peeling. Had bad experience with the enamel clear coats on places like exhaust manifolds, but not peeling, it basically burned off the paint and turned it a different color.

Thats good. I painted my water pipe with rustoleum high temp and it’s held up good for a year now. Probably best to have that powder coated for longevity

I would do that Tony. It's a small part so it wouldn't take much to have it powder coated and you will be good for a long long time.

I feel like anything that hot like the exhaust manifold should be ceramic coated. Had it done early this year and it’s really durable. Faded slightly from the original color but not too bad at all

I have a lot of small parts I’d like to powder coated so might invest in a powder coat applicator and throw the small parts in a small toaster oven. We’ll see

@TK's9d2TSi I vote for DIY powder coat. If you are paying people for powder coating - ITS NOT WORTH IT!

I used VHT engine enamel on my stroker build in 2007. Here is a picture from last month when I was cleaning up and preparing for the new setup (after spraying degreaser on the block and air spraying it dry)

The water pipe was painted with POR15 (in 2013). Very durable, holding up well.

You can do it yourself. I have a good friend that throws it in the oven....in the kitchen....he's single, LOL.
Also, so you know, they offer a Chrome powder coat that turns out pretty good, if you want something to "bling". I had this VC done a few years ago and it looks very nice. The kid that did it said he had done some tubing in Chrome Powder Coat so I had him do this.

    Those look great @rabenne @1990TSIAWDTALON !!

I was looking at por15 too but obviously a little more money for the entire kit. Might go with that instead since it looks like it holds up too. Thanks fellas!

POR15 is pretty awesome stuff. The durability is awesome. Its like having a hard coat of plastic over the part. You can brush it on, and if you follow the instructions for dry/recoat times, you will never see a brush stroke in the finished product. It is extremely good at self-leveling if used properly. The water pipe was painted for protection more than for aesthetics, but you still cant see any brush marks on it (and I wasn't even trying to hide them).

Or you could grab a cheap spray gun if you have the compressor to support it... but I am sure you also need good PPE when that stuff goes into the air...

Also, don't get it on your skin because it does not come off until that skin does.

I didn’t know that. Watched a few in depth videos and seems like good stuff. Maybe I’ll use vht on the block and por15 on subframe and suspension parts.

That's what I did... The rear knuckles turned out awesome with POR15. I also did both subframes when I installed the aluminum bushings. In retrospect I wish I had topcoated them... because POR15 by itself isnt long-term UV stable. But I havent seen any discoloration yet. When I did all these parts I just wanted to keep them from rusting, and didn't really care about how they looked. They may need topcoated later, which is more work because the parts would need to be scuffed for good paint adhesion. If you apply a topcoat with the base por15 still tacky, no additional work is necessary to get good adhesion.

I've always used vht paint or the high temperature paint that is used for grills with good results that lasted. On transmissions, I use Duplicolor ceramic aluminum engine paint and it holds up great also.

This is way important. The ONLY thing that will remove POR15 from your skin is time. If you get it on your skin, you will be looking at it for a week.

I have been using the dulicolor high temp paint (grill paint) you are describing for a long time. under hood bracketry is all painted that way, including the hood latch panel, fuse block bracket, and most recently my scatter shield was done in that color. Its a nice durable, flat finish that looks very low key. I have posted a couple pics of parts I did recently with that paint in my build journal for the silver car.
