I just painted my valve cover and a some other misc. parts with 500 degree engine enamel from a spray can. Is there something I need to do to "set" the paint or do I just throw it back on? I also used some clear coat, same kind of paint, if that matters.

Nope. Its fine. Throw it back on. Get ready to redo it when it chips in a couple months though..LOL.

Any bare aluminum surface should be primed using an Etch primer...especially valve covers as it's quite difficult to sand in every nook and cranny to assure proper adhesion.

It's a tossup on topcoat choices in areas exposed to heat- Enamel gets hard and brittle but retains it's color, Urethane will fade and yellow but stays flexible.

Well hopefully this will last until I get some core's to send off for powdercoating. Thanks for the quick replies!

I know I'm a bit of a Johnny-Come-Lately on this thread, but when I paint something with high temp paint, I throw it in the oven at ~350 for a half hour to toughen up the paint, unless the can has other instructions.

It's been over a year since I did it to my brakes, and they dont have any chips or scratches on them that I can see.

I did this one time with a valve cover, and it stood up a lot better than the times I just let the paint dry and bolted it back on. I used the oven in the house, but will never do that again. Had some pretty noxious fumes inside for awhile....

I used my oven for curing the high temp paint on my manifold and o2 housing..I also did my thermostat housing and 1g turbo to ic pipe, and my heat sheild as well..

Imo I think this is fine. Ive done this plenty of times. It looks good and like you said you'll get it powdercoated
