I appreciate all the help, so I understand you don't use AE, but could you still see a sanding primer to turn out alright with AE then?

Also a question regarding the painting of the plastic bumpers - a friend recomended using an adhesion promoter such as 'bulldog' to help bond to the plastic? does anyone else recomend this as well? thanks again :thumb:

"Bulldog" is what we used as school and it worked great. Directions are right on the can, and it's easy to use.

sweet. do you have any idea how many quarts roughly are needed for each bumper? that would be great to know.

A sanding primer for AE would be the best IMO. It will allow you to sand imperfections easily.

For the bumper-here's my thoughts on it. Bumpers suck to prep because of all the contours and it hurts when you are scuffing it so the paint sticks and you hit your fingertips against a corner. That coupled with the fact that most people want to put less work rather than more work(i.e. lazy) gives you different opinions on adhesion promoter.

I personally don't use it. For bare bumpers I use scuff paste, a grey scotchbrite pad and plenty of water. Every nook and cranny needs to be scuffed..and I mean EVERY. When people don't do this part very well, they have paint peeling and they will probably tell you that adhesion promoter is needed, the mold release won't allow paint to stick, etc.. Corners and hard to get at areas are what people always skim over. These are the exact areas where paint wants to lift from if the bumper wasn't prepped right. Just don't be lazy and treat every inch of the bumper cover the same as far as scuffing goes and you won't need a promoter.

If you're simply painting over old paint on a bumper cover then you just scuff the paint like you would any normal body panel...still no promoter needed.

And here's a preemptive answer to flex agents...they're not needed either.

I had a new, raw front bumper and I bought some Duplicolor adhesion promotor in a spray can. It basically makes the bumper tacky so the paint/primer will stick to it. I scuffed it with some 400grit for prep, then used some wax and grease remover to make sure it was clean and wouldn't have any problems with a bad reaction from car wash soap or the elements.
Since you are doing a color change, IMO you should just get the primer you originally mentioned, and then if it looks smooth when it dries, move on to your paint. Its really not difficult with single-stage paint, so don't get overwhelmed. I'm sure AwD has more experience than I, so make sure to read his stuff well, looks like lots of good advice from experience.

Where are you getting your paint from?
