So after figuring out what the problem was wrong with my car me and David got into a discussion of power on my car. He braught up adjustable cam gears for his car and I figured I'd like to be able to bring my timming up to 7 and gain alittle horsepower and get some Adjustable cam gears. I would like to know what other things I can buy that does mild hp and torque gain? Which would be best to start off first and such any advice. It's a 4g63 n/a 97,000 miles. I would like to keep it n/a for awhile because it has more compression than most 4g63's. So any advice or links would be awesome.

As suggested for any upgrade path make sure your maintenance is up to date and everything is running smoothly- hopefully this has been done already. To begin i would simply increase your cars ability to breath- by getting a high flow air filter. There are a few routes you can go so it will vary depending on your taste, K&N is always a safe choice As for the cam gears.... thats a pretty advanced and in depth approach to increasing your cars power, it does do it, but requires a dyno to be most effective. This site has alot to offer, see what other people gave done to their N/T to give it a little more GO. Good Luck!

Your keeping it non-turbo because it has higher compression? You will quickly realize that this higher compression is not nearly as nice as you think it is in that car. We are low compression for a reason. NA cars do not respond to mod's like a FI car would. Cam gears with stock cams is pointless IMO. I would seriuosly consider researching before you start dumping a ton off money into this. You will spend a ton, and gain very little.

ya, 8.5:1 for turbo 7 bolts to 9.0:1 on the NA normally aspirated 7bolts aint that much of a difference.

Adding that K&N thingey will only add maybe 7hp at the most .. and suck 20% more fuel out of the tank since the system has to remap itself for the faster airflow coming in to keep the A/F ratios at the same level. More airflow equals more fuel to keep the A/F ratios at a balance.

True, modding up a NA for more HP without not adding a turbo aint gonna happen for huge performance with the amount of green shoved down its throat.

I'm not looking for a 50 + hp gain, just small work. It's just gonna be my daily driver and just wondering what opportunities there was.

Just the basic mods are all I would do then. Intake header exhaust. Anything else would be pointless and even these mods wont give you a noticeable gain more than likely. The cheapest easiest way to go faster with an n/a car is nitrous. You can spray it with a 75 wet shot. Should give you a nice kick.

I've been working with my n/t for over a year now. It responds pretty well to simple mods.

First off, do the easy free stuff: eliminate vac lines, seal off the EGR, remove the air filter silencer, remove the plastic snorkel from the air can, take out black plastic vent that's right in front of the air can, and throw on a oil catch can. This will net you maybe a gram of hp and help clean things up a bit. If you have emissions testing in your area, the EGR and vac lines must stay.

Second, get a K&N (or similar) and hard intake pipe (Weapon R is $120, ebay pipe is $20-$40).

Third, pick up a 2.5" cat-pipe and 2.5" downpipe. The downpipe I got eliminated the catalytic, but I'm using the car for rallyx and only drive on logging roads, so I don't care. I didn't get headers because after a bit of research and questions, I didn't feel they were worth the cost.

After the above, there really isn't much available for the n/t. The next step would be lighters rods, pistons, etc., but your title says "very mild" and you're using the car as a daily, so not much of this is going to apply to you.

You can also improve your suspension, which is something I place more precedence on when starting a project.
For my n/t, I beefed up the street tires and went with a 235/60/15. This really narrowed down my tire options, so you may want to go with something a bit smaller (225).
For my dirt tires I went with a set of Lassas (205/65/15), but I don't think you're shooting for dirt driving :)

Springs, shocks, camber kits, and such are all interchangeable between the turbo and n/t DSMs, so nearly anything available for turbos, we can use.

Plus, any weight trimmings help. There isn't much to get rid of if you're using the car for the street. I got rid of the a/c, back seats, spare tire & jack, rear seat belts, radio, carpet, a lot of the plastic trim, and a few other superfluous extras, and the car maybe lost 150 lbs.

If you have any questions, just let us know :thumb:

What vac lines would you recommend sealing?
Also I don't understand where the EGR is or what it looks like.
Air Filter Silencer [ is this located in that big gauty air box?]
also plastic vent [ the one that catches the air that goes into that gauty air box]
Also How am I suppose to upgrade my air intake when I have that huge maf?

The vac lines that come off the throttle body right where the rubber hose hooks on. There are three all next to each other. It's been a few months now, but I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) one goes to the EGR, one goes to the thermostat, and the last goes to the charcoal canister under the battery. Take off the old lines and block them off (both ends) with rubber caps from Autozone or whatever.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is beneath the throttle body, see Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page and go to the 'engine' link, it has a tutorial on how to block off the EGR.

The silencer is behind the MAF (which must remain for the car to run properly). Remove the three screws that hold the big air can down. Undo the clips that hold the air can on, so you have access to the air filter. Separate the rubber hose from the air can. On the back of the air can, there is six screws that hold the MAF in place. After taking off the hose you should see the gray multi-point star shaped silencer.
You can reuse the MAF gasket if you want (manual says not to). Then reassemble it all and replace your air filter with the improved one.

The black vent is right where the headlight opening is. Your car is a 1gb, so there may not be one. I've never seen a 1gb up close.

All this will take you about an hour or so.

So you are saying the 3 vac lines that go on top of my tb. One goes to the EGR the other 2 go to my thermo vac right below my thermostat so I should block those off/.

Yes, those are them. Most people remove those and plug all open ends securely with vac hose plugs. I did it on both of my DSMs and have had no ill effects. It's mainly for emissions.

oh okay, i'll get on those on my day off thanks for the help any other recommendations you suggest? Also are you saying run the air intake without the gaint can on it?

No problem :thumb: Everything I recommended are things I've actually tried. I would consult the tech guide for more ideas http://www.dsmtuners.com/tech.html

Also are you saying run the air intake without the gaint can on it?

I just removed the plastic snorkels on mine, but I left the black can on. It's there to protect the air intake from the immense heat of the engine (you want cooler air entering the engine).
Some will argue that it chokes the intake of air to leave it on. However, there is a cool air reservoir on the n/t cars (where the intercooler is on turbo models) that helps feed the intake.
A side note: if you have fogs, that opening is somewhat blocked.

Oh okay I getcha now. Well I will give those things a try and is it possible to make my own egr block off plate made out of sheet metal?
